ALCS Game 1: Time for revenge

(MLB GIF Hub)

Here we go everyone. The two teams that seemed to be on a collision course all season are set to begin this best-of-7 down in Houston. I, for one, would like to see the Yankees get some vengeance for losing the 2017 ALCS to the Astros.

Tonight will be the third time the Yankees have seen Zack Greinke this season, though a few players in tonight’s lineup weren’t around back in that April matchup. The Rays roughed up Greinke in the ALDS and has a history of postseason struggles. Hopefully the Yankees build on that tonight.

Meanwhile, postseason ace Masahiro Tanaka has the duty of facing an all-time great Astros lineup. He pitched brilliantly against the Astros back in the 2017 ALCS and has a history of big game performances, so it would be no surprise if he shut down Houston tonight.

With that, let’s get to the lineups:

New York Yankees

  1. DJ LeMahieu, 1B
  2. Aaron Judge, RF
  3. Gleyber Torres, 2B
  4. Edwin Encarnación, DH
  5. Giancarlo Stanton, LF
  6. Brett Gardner, CF (L)
  7. Gary Sánchez, C
  8. Gio Urshela, 3B
  9. Didi Gregorius, SS (L)

RHP Masahiro Tanaka

Houston Astros

  1. George Springer, RF
  2. Michael Brantley, LF (L)
  3. José Altuve, 2B
  4. Alex Bregman, 3B
  5. Yordan Álvarez, DH (L)
  6. Yuli Gurriel, 1B
  7. Carlos Correa, SS
  8. Kyle Tucker, RF (L)
  9. Robinson Chirinos, C

RHP Zack Greinke

In case you missed it earlier today, Bobby put together a news and notes post to help you catch up with the latest. Additionally, Steven wrote up the series preview yesterday.

Tonight’s game is on FOX and first pitch is scheduled for 8:08pm. And, as usual, John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman have the radio call on WFAN. Let’s go Yankees!

Everything is as it should be and I rejoice in today.

Why Maybin there? Isn’t Hicks in center and Gardy in left the superior defensive arrangement?

2nd place MVP vote to the guy in the replay booth, right there. Taking off that run was huge.

    1st place goes without saying.

I take it back. The booth guy gets the third place vote.

I’m having to listen to the radio, and I want to murder Sterling. He made me think Judge had hit a homer.

It looked like he had one. Most people watching thought it was out.

      • lightSABR

Really? He tried to get Suzyn to agree it looked like it was gone, and she wouldn’t. But I guess I can forgive him as long as we win.

Everyone’s used to the juiced ball, I guess.

I incredibly nervous already for this game and we’re an hour from first pitch. How is everyone else feeling?

    • Betty Lizard

I have my Gleyber Torres t shirt on, I’m sitting on my patio in 83 degree weather, and I’m drinking a martini so I’m feeling fine!

    • lightSABR

Anxious enough that I’m tempted not to follow the game, and just find out tomorrow what happened.

I won’t, but the pressure tonight is huge–the best chance we have to win a game against them in Houston. Here’s hoping Tanaka carves them to pieces.

It’s a good thing I love process. I just want to see my baseball boyfriend (Gleyber Torres) play and I’d CC pitches at all, I will consider the season complete. I’m so grateful for what the Yankees have done this season. It has been a joy to watch them.

        • Betty Lizard

I’d be happy if CC pitches at all.

        • lightSABR

I admire your Zen baseball tool. But I do not want to get eliminated again by Houston. And it’s been way, way too long since we won a pennant.

Ive been ready to vomit since about 2:30 lol

  8. Interesting lineup changes-Gleyber batting 3rd makes lots of sense, surprised to see Didi batting 9th after his ALDS. In any event, this is a packed batting order capable of scoring lots of runs.

The Yankees really need 1 game in Houston before going home, they could then win 2 out of 3 at Yankee Stadium and once again go back to Houston with a 3-2 lead and Paxton and Sevy lined up for games 6 and 7 against Verlander and Cole.

All in all it should be a great series and close-you just can’t predict baseball, as well all know, Suzyn, so should be very, very interesting.
