The Yankees 2021 Opening Day roster is set

@Yankees

Aaron Boone informed the media this afternoon that Lucas Luetge has made the team, which settles the final spot on the Yankees 2021 Opening Day roster. There will be a corresponding move soon because the Yankees have a full 40-man roster and Luetge is not yet on it. Could be something as simple as placing Zack Britton on the 60-day injured list, but we’ll update this post as soon as that’s announced.

Here’s what the 26-man roster looks like for tomorrow’s opener against the Blue Jays:

Position Players (13)

  1. Gary Sánchez (C)
  2. Kyle Higashioka (C)
  3. Jay Bruce (1B/OF)
  4. DJ LeMahieu (2B)
  5. Gio Urshela (3B)
  6. Gleyber Torres (SS)
  7. Tyler Wade (IF)
  8. Clint Frazier (OF)
  9. Aaron Hicks (OF)
  10. Aaron Judge (OF)
  11. Giancarlo Stanton (DH/OF)
  12. Brett Gardner (OF)
  13. Mike Tauchman (OF)

Pitchers (13)

  1. Gerrit Cole (RHSP)
  2. Corey Kluber (RHSP)
  3. Domingo Germán (RHSP)
  4. Jordan Montgomery (LHSP)
  5. Jameson Taillon (RHSP)
  6. Aroldis Chapman (LHRP)*
  7. Chad Green (RHRP)
  8. Darren O’Day (RHRP)
  9. Jonathan Loaisiga (RHRP)
  10. Luis Cessa (RHRP)
  11. Nick Nelson (RHRP)
  12. Michael King (RHRP)
  13. Lucas Luetge (LHRP)

*Chapman will serve a two-game suspension to start the season.

Injured List (5): Luis Severino (RHSP), Clarke Schmidt (RHSP), Zack Britton (LHRP), Justin Wilson (LHRP), Luke Voit (1B)

At the outset of spring training, there’s no way you could have told me Luetge would have made the team. But after his performance in Grapefruit League play, it’s not a surprise.

Now, the Yankees 2021 Opening Day roster is just that — the roster for the first game(s) of the season. It’s undoubtedly an honor for some players to make the club out of camp, especially those fighting for a gig or making the club for the first time. But it’s also going to warp drastically over time. There’s a pretty decent chance we forget about some of these players being on the team come season’s end. For now though, it’s exciting to see everything come together in advance of tomorrow’s opener, even if this was just a formality.

Luetge is a nice story. Let’s hope it remains a nice story all the way through #28 come this October.

So teams aren’t allowed to replace their suspended players? What happens if like 10 players were suspended in a brawl?!
