UPDATE, 9:43 PM:
Luke Voit left tonight with a “core muscle” injury. He’s getting an MRI tonight.— Lindsey Adler (@lindseyadler) July 31, 2019
Well, this is not good. The Yankees replaced Luke Voit defensively in the fifth inning of tonight’s affair against the Diamondbacks. He was hit by a pitch in the first inning, but stayed in therafter. In his second plate appearance, Voit struck out swinging and the YES Network cameras caught the first baseman grimace as he retreated to the dugout. It’s not clear what he hurt, but it’s easy to worry about some sort of oblique injury.
Voit has a 135 wRC+ this season and would be a significant loss if out for an extended period. The Yankees could turn internally to Edwin Encarnación or DJ LeMahieu at first base, which would either open a spot at designated hitter or give Gio Urshela an everyday role again. Alternatively, the Yankees could look make to a deal with mere hours to go until the trade deadline. Perhaps Justin Smoak or Derek Dietrich? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. More info to come hopefully by the postgame.
