The Yankees will have at least two players representing them on July 9 in Cleveland. Gary Sánchez, also known as the Best Catcher in Baseball™, and DJ “It’s French for the Mahieu” LeMahieu have been voted AL All-Star Game starters. Obviously, Gary is the AL Catcher and LeMahieu will play 2nd.

It will mark Sánchez’s second appearance in the Mid-Summer Classic, as he represented the Yanks back in 2017 and participated in the Home Run Derby. This will be LeMahieu’s 3rd appearance after representing the Rockies in 2015 and 2017. Ironically, he was not an All-Star in 2016, when he won the NL batting crown. You just can’t predict baseball, Suzyn.

No real surprises here. If you’re assigned NYY MVPs in the 1st half of the season so far, Gary and DJ are your options, really. Here are there basic stats on the year:

  • Sánchez: .266/.332/.607 (139 wRC+) with 23 home runs. He’s been worth 2.0 fWAR and 2.4 bWAR.
  • LeMahieu: .336/.385/.522 (139 wRC+) with 12 home runs. He’s been worth a ridiculous 3.2 fWAR and 3.8 bWAR, both of which would be the 2nd highest WAR of his career over a full season.

It’s neat that they both have the same wRC+, no? They’re both very different hitters having very different seasons, and I always think it’s fun when two entirely different profiles have similar adjusted stats. Could just be me, though.

Anyway, a bit of a disappointment for Luke Voit and Gio Urshela. I never expected Gio to win, despite Steven’s best efforts, but it would have been nice for Voit. Oh well. Judge was another candidate up for the vote, but come on. That wasn’t ever going to happen.

If you want more Yanks in the game, fret not–the reserves and pitching staffs will be announced on Sunday at 5:30 on ESPN. I expect to see at least a few more Yanks in the game, and it would be cool to see Voit in the Derby. We’ll see.
