Game 99: Battle of the division leaders

After taking seven of 10 in a homestand to start the second half, the Yankees head out on the road to face some stiffer competition. First up, the Twins.

Minnesota leads the American League Central, though the Twins’ hold over the Indians is tenuous at the moment. With just nine days until the deadline, Minnesota remains on the prowl for upgrades to help hold off the preseason favorites. Here’s my writeup of the team for this series.

This is the second matchup between these two teams in 2019 as the Yankees took two of three in the Bronx in May. The Twinkies are a good test for New York, which has the league’s best record against teams over .500. It also could be a postseason preview.

Let’s get to the lineups:

Yankees (64-34)

  1. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
  2. Aaron Judge, RF
  3. Edwin Encarnación, 1B
  4. Gary Sánchez, C
  5. Aaron Hicks, CF
  6. Luke Voit, DH
  7. Gleyber Torres, SS
  8. Gio Urshela, 3B
  9. Mike Tauchman, LF

LHP CC Sabathia

Twins (60-38)

  1. Mitch Garver, C
  2. Jorge Polanco, SS
  3. Nelson Cruz, DH
  4. Eddie Rosario, LF
  5. Miguel Sano, 1B
  6. Marwin Gonzalez, RF
  7. Max Kepler, CF
  8. Jonathan Schoop, 2B
  9. Luis Arraez, 3B

LHP Martín Pérez

News & Notes

  • Brett Gardner is still out with a sore left knee, though he did go through pregame work. Perhaps his early-season workload had caught up to him for the nth straight year.
  • Cameron Maybin is beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre this week, so he should be back with the team soon.
  • Normal day off for Didi Gregorius.
  • Jonathan Loaisiga has a 3-inning sim game coming soon while Jordan Montgomery has resumed throwing. Ben Heller hopes to do the same soon.
  • Finally, Jonathan Holder is back with the Yankees, who sent down Stephen Tarpley following the Rockies series. Holder gave up five runs (four earned) in 10.1 IP with the Railriders and struck out 14 batters as opposed to just two walks.

Tonight’s game is an 8:10 p.m. start on YES. Weather in Minneapolis is supposed to be 75 degrees and clear at game time. Enjoy the evening!

How come game thread comments haven’t taken off here like they did with RAB?

What’s going on with this TD? Single trade deadline, we were supposed to see more action happening earlier. Its probably just a symptom of a handful of teams sitting on the bubble right now, but it’s starting to fell a bit like the off-season, when a bunch of teams collectively decided they were lukewarm about getting better. I’ll reserve judgment for now.
