Game 73: Sweep the Rays!

Parrot says sweep!

The Yankees took the first two games of this three-game set by three-run margins and now have a chance to sweep it. If you’d told me before the series the Yankees would take two of three, I’d have been satisfied. But let’s go for the kill.

The Yankees lead the Rays by 2.5 games, three in the loss column. A win would give the Yankees a strong 3.5 game-lead with eight more games against the Rays in the next month or so. The only small misfortune is that beating the Rays gives the Red Sox an edge in the Wild Card race, but let the Tampa worry about that.

It’s going to be another rainy afternoon in the Bronx, so the game may be played in a misty haze just like yesterday.

Notes

  • ICYMI: Aaron Judge may be back on Friday. He’s scheduled to play right field for the second straight day today and then could just take a day off and return Friday. Seems a little rushed, but he homered with two walks yesterday. Maybe he’s fully ready.
  • Weird that Stanton gets a day off on his second day back, but them’s the breaks? Maybin’s been raking, Gardner has solid numbers against Snell and Encarnación is the DH.
  • Jordan Montgomery is coming to New York to get an MRI on his shoulder. It’s not the elbow, but it’s a bad sign anyway as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.
  • Luis Severino is throwing off flat ground and is supposed to be throwing on a mound June 25 or 26.

The game is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. on YES and MLB Network for those out of market. Hopefully rain doesn’t chase this one away.

Wow. That really sucks to hear about Chad Montgomery. I hope it’s nothing serious. The team could use Chad, if not this season, as real option next season. Get well, Chad.

If you have the opportunity to sit Stanton and play a guy hitting .176/.208/.275 against one of the best LHP in the game right now; well that’s just something you can’t pass up! SMDH.

I’m already excited for how the Yankees sell us on the fact that they’re going to keep Gardner and not Maybin when Judge is back. That should be swell.
