Game 70: Vying for a split with the C+ lineup

After dropping the first two games of the series, the Yankees head into Sunday with an opportunity to salvage a split after a Saturday night victory.

However, we’re a couple of days away from the Yankees’ lineup approaching full strength. Edwin Encarnación will meet the Bombers in the Bronx on Monday while Giancarlo Stanton still has another day left in his rehab stint.

Meanwhile, Gary Sanchez sits in the day game after a night game. Didi Gregorius and Aaron Hicks get a day off after starting three consecutive games. That leaves the Yankees without their top lineup to back James Paxton on Father’s Day.

Yankees (42-27)

  2. Luke Voit, 1B
  3. Gleyber Torres, SS
  4. Clint Frazier, DH
  5. Brett Gardner, CF
  6. Gio Urshela, 3B
  7. Mike Tauchman, RF
  8. Austin Romine, C
  9. Cameron Maybin LF

LHP James Paxton

White Sox (34-35)

  2. Tim Anderson, SS
  3. José Abreu, 1B
  4. James McCann, C

  • Encarnación will be the Yankees’ primary DH, Aaron Boone told reporters. He also gives the Bombers an experienced reserve first baseman after starting most of this season there in Seattle.
  • Why is Stanton not coming back Monday? The Yankees are giving him a travel day from Durham to the Bronx on Monday, though it’s more a day off after playing three straight days for the first time since March. He’ll be in the lineup Tuesday barring a setback.
  • Boone still believes Brett Gardner will “play a lot” despite Encarnacion and Stanton joining the roster. Expect plenty of days off for Stanton, Hicks and Judge even when they’re all healthy.
  • For the White Sox, Yoan Moncada returns after missing three straight starts with a back issue.

Happy Father’s Day, everyone. Enjoy the 2:10 p.m. start on YES.

C+ lineup more than up to the task. I was hoping for 3 of 4 here (well, 4 of 4, but being realistic). That really required them to nail down game one when they had a comfortable lead what with Cyolito going Saturday. At least they’ll pull out the split on the road.

As for Gardner, he will play a lot. The fourth OFer always plays a lot.
