Game 47: Finish the Orioles

The Yankees are riding a 4-game winning streak and they have a 4-game loss-column lead over the 9th place Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles for the final playoff spot. They’re just a game behind the Blue Jays in the AL East, which puts them just a game out of the 5th seed. While a playoff spot was never truly in doubt, it is all but guaranteed now. Oh, how a season can change in a week.

Anyway, the Yankees have a chance to essentially put the Orioles out of their misery today. I think they should do that. Here are the lineups:

Baltimore Orioles (20-25)
1. Hanser Alberto, 2B
2. José Iglesias, DH
3. Ryan Mountcastle, LF
4. Pedro Severino, C
5. Renato Nuñez, 1B
6. DJ Stewart, RF
7. Pat Valaika, SS
8. Rio Ruiz, 3B
9. Cedric Mullins, CF
John Means, LHP

New York Yankees (25-21)
1. DJ LeMahieu, 3B
2. Luke Voit, 1B
3. Aaron Hicks, CF
4. Clint Frazier, RF
5. Miguel Andújar, LF
6. Gary Sánchez, DH
7. Kyle Higashioka C
8. Thairo Estrada, 2B
9. Tyler Wade, SS
J.A. Happ, LHP

I saw some people angry at this lineup – especially that Torres is sitting – but don’t count me among them. Again, the key is staying healthy for October. The slide of the last few weeks is over and that’s the goal again. This lineup is plenty good to beat the Orioles.

News & Notes

  • Giancarlo Stanton and Gio Urshela are at the Alternate Site today, which is good. They’re one step closer to a return. (Max Goodman)
  • Stanton will get 2-3 at-bats today and likely do the same tomorrow, which is good again. (Max Goodman)
  • Aaron Judge will join them as soon as tomorrow, but even while he’ll play RF when he returns, Clint will still be in the MLB lineup. Imagine that. (Max Goodman)
  • Deivi Garcia, Gerrit Cole, and Masahiro Tanaka will pitch in this week’s series against the Blue Jays, which will be a big one. (Erik Boland)
  • Finally, Aroldis Chapman almost certainly “made number two in [his] pants”, in the words of Adriana La Cerva, while pitching yesterday. You can’t make it up. Here’s the incredible video of Aaron Boone:

First pitch of this one is at 1:05 pm ET, with YES on the broadcast and WFAN/WADO on the radio call. Enjoy the game, everyone.
