Game 46: Hoping for a Re-Cole-very

After a stellar start from Jordan Montgomery last night, along with a triple play, and some heroics by Gleyber Torres, the Yankees are back out there this afternoon for their second game of three against the White Sox. Gerrit Cole takes the mound coming off his worst start of the year in Texas, looking to bounce back. Here’s the lineup, featuring Leadoff Luke, with DJ LeMahieu getting a day off:

  2. Brett Gardner, CF
  3. Aaron Judge, RF
  4. Gio Urshela, 3B
  5. Gleyber Torres, SS
  6. Rougned Odor, 2B
  7. Miguel Andújar, LF
  8. Mike Ford, 1B
  9. Kyle Higashioka, C

Against Cole, the White Sox will have Dylan Cease on the mound and the following lineup:

  1. Tim Anderson, SS
  2. Adam Eaton, RF
  3. Yoán Moncada, 3B
  4. José Abreu, 1B
  5. Yermín Mercedes, DH
  6. Yasmani Grandal, C
  7. Andrew Vaughn, LF

Today shows you just how great Gerrit Cole is because he had no command of his fastball until the 6th inning or so and pitched around it nearly the whole game, and shut down one of the better hitting teams in baseball.

Just an amazing performance by one of the best, period.

I suspect Frazier would have been put on the IL if the Yankees weren’t short of OFers. He no doubt can play if he needs to put in as an emergency defensive replacement.

The DeShields rumor is interesting, but no movement on it. The Yankees don’t leak, so that means the Rangers are the one who leaked the story out. It would make sense. DeShields has an opt out in a little over than a week. The Rangers leaking the story about the Yankees is a way to try and perhaps engage other teams and create some leverage. Problem is, they have little with that opt out. A strong defensive CFer and a righty, he makes a good match with Gardner and a better fit than Tauchman.

Who’s the odd-man out in the Yankee pen when Day returns? I can’t remember who they filled his roster spot with.

The current bullpen is Chapman, Green, Loaisiga, Wilson, Peralta, Luetge, Cessa, King.

King seems like the odd-man out when O’Day is back? The real question is who gets the boot when Britton comes back? One of Wilson, Luetge, or Cessa.

Yes, King would be it. He has options and is member of the Scranton Shuttle. The Britton one is interesting. They won’t cut any of those three, so maybe a deal? Perhaps Cessa moves in part of a deal for a CFer. They could also send Peralta down as he also has an option. Feels wrong, but they may opt to maintain depth. As I write this, I’ve convinced myself Peralta is will join the Scranton Shuttle.
