Game 36: Playing through it

Gerrit Cole is on the bump tonight.

As I’ll highlight in the news and notes section, the Yankees’ traveling party is in the midst of a COVID-19 outbreak. Nonetheless, the Yankees and Rays will play on today. All of the positives are within the coaching and support staff, though Gleyber Torres has been held out of today’s lineup in relation to the team’s situation. Sounds like we’ll know whether or not he has tested positive after the game. I don’t know what the protocols are, but it doesn’t seem like a great idea to play, especially now that there’s a potential infection to a player who was involved in last night’s action. Alas.

Here are the lineups:

New York Yankees (19-16)

  1. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
  2. Giancarlo Stanton, DH
  3. Aaron Judge, RF
  4. Gio Urshela, 3B
  5. Luke Voit, 1B
  6. Aaron Hicks, CF
  7. Clint Frazier, LF
  8. Kyle Higashioka, C
  9. Tyler Wade, SS

RHP Gerrit Cole

Tampa Bay Rays (19-18)

  1. Randy Arozarena, DH
  2. Austin Meadows, LF
  3. Manuel Margot, RF
  4. Brandon Lowe, 2B
  5. Yandy Díaz, 1B
  6. Joey Wendle, 3B
  7. Mike Zunino, C
  8. Willy Adames, SS
  9. Brett Phillips, CF

RHP Collin McHugh

News & Notes

  • McHugh will serve as the opener for the Rays, likely going one turn through the order. Ryan Yarbrough will pitch in the bulk role.
  • To reiterate, Gleyber Torres sits today out of “an abundance of caution” per Aaron Boone, which is related to the Yankees COVID-19 outbreak. (Lindsey Adler)
  • The Yankees have seven positive cases, including coaches Phil Nevin, Reggie Willits, and Matt Blake. Others are unnamed members of the support staff. (Adler)
  • Everyone in the Yankees’ traveling party has been tested three times since yesterday morning. (Bryan Hoch)

This one starts at 7:10pm eastern on YES and WFAN locally. Enjoy the game.

Game 36: Gerrit Cole rules

Shouldn’t there be more concern here? The Yankees are vaccinated. We know at minimum 85% have been vaccinated, which means the number is almost assuredly higher. We also know that no vaccine is 100% effective, so there will be some random breakthrough infections. That’s not the issue. The issue is we have at least seven (and counting) positive COVID infections on the Yankees. This is not a random breakthrough, this is an outbreak among a small, vaccinated group of people. Not a one-off random case, but an outbreak. Why is this happening and why has no one asked that question?

This is not a Yankee story. This is a vaccination story. I’m vaccinated. I want to know the answer, but no one seems to be asking the question. How and why is this happening in a small group of vaccinated people?

    • Gerreddardit Cole

As I said below, I just read they got the J&J vaccine which was only 72% effective. They needed Pfizer’s 95% being that they’re so close to each other every day.

      • MikeD

I don’t know, Gerreddardit. On this one you might be correct!

  2. Gerreddardit Cole

They need to play these ballgames, Derek. But how did this happen? I thought the coaches and players were all vaccinated. Should we be getting the vaccine since it clearly didn’t help these coaches? I just don’t get it. They said the vaccine would stop these outbreaks and now they’re all wearing masks again. The entire training/medical staff needs to be fired. With Cole on the mound this game is too important to not play. There are more important things than living and baseball is one of them.

    • Gerreddardit Cole

I just read they got the J&J one shot vaccine. Give them Pfizer, Stevie! The entire medical and training staff should be fired for botching this. That quack Dr. Ahmad should be first.

  3. Idaho Nuke

It’s perfectly fine for them to play.
