Game 33: Time to gain ground

Today was a bit of a dud in terms of trade deadline inactivity for the Yankees, but they can end the night on a better note: with a win against the Rays. Entering tonight’s three game series, Tampa Bay has a 3.5 game advantage on the Bombers in the AL East. Here are the lineups for this one:

Tampa Bay Rays (24-11)

  2. Brandon Lowe, RF
  3. Yandy Díaz, 3B
  4. Ji-Man Choi, 1B
  5. Willy Adames, SS
  6. Joey Wendle, 2B
  7. Manuel Margot, LF
  8. Kevin Kiermaier, CF
  9. Michael Perez, C

RHP Tyler Glasnow

New York Yankees (19-13)

  1. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
  2. Luke Voit, DH
  3. Mike Ford, 1B
  4. Clint Frazier, RF
  5. Gio Urshela, 3B
  6. Mike Tauchman, LF
  7. Gary Sánchez, C
  8. Jordy Mercer, SS
  9. Brett Gardner, CF

RHP Gerrit Cole

News & Notes

  • Aaron Hicks is not in the lineup after he exited yesterday’s game with calf cramps. He is available off the bench per Aaron Boone, though. Apparently, he’s fine and this is just a rest day. We’ll see.
  • Why no trades today? Brian Cashman said other teams weren’t making sensible offers. He couldn’t live with what it’d cost to bolster this roster. Sigh.

Sorry for the late thread — this one is already underway on YES, WFAN, and WADO. Enjoy the ballgame.

The reason Cash did nothing is because he thinks this is a lost year. It was very telling. Even Cole is getting bombed by .200 hitters. He hasn’t been an ace for us. After we get swept into the East River by Tampa it’s time to start giving the kids more playing time to see what they can do. Trotting out the Jody Mercers and Mike Tauchmans ain’t doing anybody any good.
