Game 31: Cole goes for sweep against former team

Two down, one to go. And who better to have on the mound while going for the sweep than Gerrit Cole? The Yankees’ ace has been lights out this season, entering today with a 1.43 ERA in six starts. This will be the toughest lineup he’s faced to date (Toronto the next-best), but Cole is more than equipped to deal with Houston’s deep lineup. Hopefully he mows down his ex-teammates (well, some of them) en route to victory.

Lance McCullers Jr. is on the other side of this one, and he’s been good so far this season too. The righty has a 3.38 ERA in 5 starts, but he’s also yet to face a lineup like this. He does have some prior success against the Yankees, namely when he threw 24 straight curveballs to finish the 2017 ALCS.

Here are the lineups behind both starters:

Houston Astros (15-15)

  1. José Altuve, 2B
  2. Michael Brantley, LF
  3. Alex Bregman, 3B
  4. Yordan Álvarez, DH
  5. Yuli Gurriel, 1B
  6. Carlos Correa, SS
  7. Kyle Tucker, RF
  8. Myles Straw, CF
  9. Martín Maldonado, C

RHP Lance McCullers Jr.

New York Yankees (16-14)

  1. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
  2. Giancarlo Stanton, DH
  3. Aaron Judge, RF
  4. Gio Urshela, 3B
  5. Gleyber Torres, SS
  6. Mike Ford, 1B
  7. Aaron Hicks, CF
  8. Kyle Higashoka, C
  9. Clint Frazier, LF

RHP Gerrit Cole

Instead of leaving Green in to lose the game, why not bring Chapman in to face Altuve? It was obvious that at-bat would decide the game either way. Boone leaving in his most HR-prone reliever is just stupid.

    • Gerreddardit Cole

That’s too innovative for Boone. He’s got a 7th inning guy Loisaga, 8th inning guy Green, and 9th inning guy Chapman. Then if it doesn’t work he can just say that’s his usual formula.

  2. Gerreddardit Cole

And Chad Green just lost the sweep and gave Altuve the last laugh. I know he’s been good this year but he just ain’t a big game pitcher. We need Britton back soon.
