Game 25: First place on the line

Although this afternoon’s affair isn’t a must win by any stretch of the imagination, it’d be awfully nice to send the Rays away from the Bronx still in second place. The Yankees have played a lot of ugly baseball against Tampa Bay this season and haven’t come through in key moments, but today isn’t the time to dwell on that. Wipe the slate clean and wrap up this series on a positive note. The Rays enter today behind the Yankees just a half game in the AL East, so the division lead is at stake this afternoon. Here are the lineups:

Tampa Bay Rays (16-9)

  1. Mike Brosseau, 1B
  2. Austin Meadows, LF
  3. Yandy Díaz, 3B
  4. José Martínez, DH
  5. Hunter Renfroe, RF
  6. Willy Adames, SS
  7. Manuel Margot, CF
  8. Joey Wendle, 2B
  9. Mike Zunino, C

RHP John Curtiss

New York Yankees (16-8)

  1. Aaron Hicks, DH
  2. Luke Voit, 1B
  3. Mike Tauchman, LF
  4. Gio Urshela, 3B
  5. Gleyber Torres, SS
  6. Brett Gardner, CF
  7. Clint Frazier, RF
  8. Erik Kratz, C
  9. Tyler Wade, 2B

LHP James Paxton

News & Notes

  • The Yankees made a few roster moves this morning.
  • Curtiss serves as the opener today for Tampa Bay. It sounds like Trevor Richards will follow for the bulk work.
  • It’s a day off for a couple of key figures on both sides. For the Rays, hot-hitting Brandon Lowe is out of the lineup. That might be a nice break for the Yanks. Meanwhile, Gary Sánchez sits in a day game after a night game.
  • ICYMI, I wrote about today’s five-hitter, who is in the midst of a power outage.

The game gets underway at 1:05 p.m. EDT. It’s on YES locally and MLB Network out-of-market. WFAN and WADO have the radio call. Have a nice day, everyone.

Zack Britton to the injured list among other roster moves

Gleyber Torres exits game due to tight hamstring

  1. Gerreddardit Cole

Aaron Boone is getting his ass handed to him by Cash. Boone brings in Crappavino and Cash is ready to spring his trap of lefty batters.

  2. Gerreddardit Cole

And now Gleyber is out with a leg pull. This entire training and medical staff needs to be fired immediately. We left some in place and it was a huge mistake. They don’t get these players ready to play.

And Kratz has done more in 2 ABs than Gary has done all season. And he has fixed Paxton. Let’s give him more starts please.

    • JG (Ben Francisco)

I’m so tired of these quacks, Eddard

  3. Gerreddardit Cole

Must win, Derek. If we can’t beat the Rays in NY against an opener with their best player on the bench then we won’t beat them in October. And if they get HFA we won’t beat them in Tampa. Cash is trying to hand us a win and Boone will do his best to lose it. When Mike Tauchman and Gio Urshela are your 3-4 hitters you’re in trouble. Voit shouldn’t get a single hittable pitch if they’re smart.
