Game 19: Judge-Less Yanks Look to Win 7th Straight Against Boston

The Yankees have won six consecutive games against the rival Red Sox, dating back to last September. This is a good streak and I’d like for it to continue. The good news is that Gerrit Cole is on the hill for the Yankees tonight. The other good news is that the Red Sox are terrible. The bad news is that Aaron Judge is not in tonight’s lineup and is now on the 10-day IL.

Here are tonight’s lineups:

Boston Red Sox (6-13)
1. Alex Verdugo, LR
2. Rafael Devers, 3B
3. J.D. Martinez, DH
4. Xander Boegarts, SS
5. Mitch Moreland, 1B
6. Christian Vázquez, C
7. Kevin Pillar, RF
8. Jackie Bradley Jr., CF
9. Jonathan Araúz, 2B
Colten Brewer, RHP

New York Yankees (12-6)
1. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
2. Luke Voit, 1B
3. Aaron Hicks, CF
4. Gio Urshela, 3B
5. Gleyber Torres, SS
6. Mike Tauchman, RF
7. Gary Sánchez, C
8. Clint Frazier, DH
9. Brett Gardner, LF
Gerrit Cole, RHP

This is probably the lineup we’ll have to get used to. Or some variation close to it. Judge going down means that this is Frazier’s latest opportunity. It sure would be cool to see him take advantage of it.

News & Notes

  • The big news, obviously, is that Aaron Judge is out for at least the next 10 days. I have more on that here.
  • Thairo Estrada is the replacement on the roster for Aaron Judge. Boone says he “fills a role” and says there are still no consistent at-bats available for Miguel Andújar, so it sounds like he’s here to stay. (Lindsey Adler) They say service time isn’t a consideration, to which I say sure. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.
  • Aroldis Chapman is pitching again at the Alternative Site. (Conor Foley) He threw 25 pitches and topped out at 99 mph. (Conor Foley)
  • Deivi Garcia is also pitching in that sim game, which is cool. (Conor Foley)
  • James Paxton says he’s getting his velocity back, which is good. (SNY)
  • Greg Bird is a free agent again after spending 1 day on Texas’ active roster a few weeks ago. Poor guy. You gotta feel for him at this point. (Evan Grant)

First pitch for this one is 7:05 pm ET. As always, you can catch the game on YES locally or on WFAN/WADO on the radio. Enjoy the game, everyone.

Aaron Judge is Headed to the IL with a Calf Strain

Game 19: The One Where They Break Out of Slumps

  1. Wire Fan

Aaron Hicks is going to need to step up, especially if the Yankees insist on hitting him 3rd. Hopefully Torres and Sanchez can get going too.

  2. Mungo

In Andujar’s case, I’m sure it’s a bit of both. With Frazier up, and Ford and Tauchman on the roster, there’s not really any easy ways for him to get ABs, so might as well let him play daily at the alternate site since he missed all of last year. The fact they can buy a year of service back is a bonus. There’s no compelling reason to bring him up. At least yet.

    • Gerreddardit Cole

I just knew that Judge would go on the IL, Bobby. This happens every year. First the guy is out a day for rest, then it’s too weeks and then it’s three months. Judge is done for the year. Both him and Stanton are made out of peanut brittle. What happened to guys like Bernie and The Warrior Paul O’Neill who never missed a game?

And why did Boone lie to us? That’s fine when you’re making up stats about coronavirus but not with something as important as Judge’s calf. Don’t worry, Meredith will get to the bottom of it.

gotta revive the next man up mentality again I guess. Good thing we have insane depth
