Game 162: The End of the Regular Season

Well, we made it. The end of the regular season is upon us. Today’s game has only two goals, in my opinion: don’t get hurt and hit more home runs than the Twins. The first one is obvious. The second one is kind of irrelevant, but personally, I prefer it when the Yankees hold records as opposed to when they do not. Just me, though.

After this, it will be four full days off before the start of the American League Division Series against the Minnesota Twins. That will begin on Friday at a still-to-be-disclosed time. We’ll keep you posted.

5. Gleyber Torres, 2B
6. Gary Sánchez, C
7. Didi Gregorius, SS
8. Gio Urshela, 3B

News & Notes

  • Edwin Encarnación will not play today, but that’s just because they’re playing it very safe. They expect him to get some simulated games in during the break, and I think this is the right move. There’s no point in rushing Encarnación back, and the extra week can make a big difference. One setback with an injury like an oblique strain and he could miss the entire postseason. I say no thank you to that.
  • Luis Severino wants revenge against the Twins for his 2017 AL Wild Card start. I’m glad he got his shaky start out of the way last night, and I have to say: I just love rooting for Severino. I hope he gets his revenge.
  • Today will be the first relief appearance of Masahiro Tanaka’s career. A lot of people are reading a lot into this because of Boone’s comments a few weeks ago, but I would personally but capital-s Stunned if the Yankees don’t start Masahiro as a traditional starter next weekend, but then again, I’m just a moron with a keyboard. What the hell do I know.
  • Luke Voit says he’s healthy and just slumping at the plate, which sounds about right to me. He’s still getting on base despite his vicious slump at the plate. Lindsey Adler thinks the Yankees may not carry Voit on the ALDS roster. I personally don’t think so. Carry your best players on the roster, but that’s just me.
  • Boy oh boy have the Yankees rested their top bullpen arms recently. I love it, personally. Jack Curry has the pitch counts over the last few weeks. Safe to say these guys will be well rested come next series.

This one will start at 3:05 pm EST, and you can catch it on YES or with Ma and Pa Yankee on WFAN. It’s also the last game at the Ballpark at Arlington. Pretty weird. Always seemed like a nice one. See you after the game, everyone.

I mentioned this last night. But, I think they’ve given their main bullpen guys too much rest.

Regarding Encarnacion, it’s worrisome that he’s going to be hitting in the middle of the lineup on Friday without getting in any regular season “rehab” games. They have enough bats struggling right now as it is.
