Exhibition games are reserved for spring training, though tonight’s series opener in Detroit could feel like one. The Tigers have the league’s worst record and as Steven wrote this afternoon, they have to hope this is rock bottom in its current rebuild.

Still, tonight’s game counts. The Yankees are still playing for home field advantage. That said, judging by tonight’s lineup, it’s not being prioritized over providing players with ample rest in advance of the playoffs. Of course, the Yankees don’t need their A-lineup to beat the Tigers. They can afford to give a few breathers against Detroit while still being easily favored. Here’s how the lineups shake out tonight:

  2. Brett Gardner, CF
  3. Gary Sánchez, C
  4. Edwin Encarnación, DH
  5. Didi Gregorius, SS
  6. Gio Urshela, 3B
  7. Mike Ford, 1B
  8. Clint Frazier, LF
  9. Tyler Wade, RF

News & Notes

  • The Yankees activated Ben Heller off the 60-day injured list. To make room on the 40-man roster, Adonis Rosa was designated for assignment. Heller hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2017 because of Tommy John surgery. In 13 2/3 rehab innings, Heller allowed just one run and struck out 15 batters.
  • Mike Tauchman was placed on the 10-day injured list because of his calf strain.

Tonight’s game begins at 6:40pm on YES and WFAN. Enjoy!
