Game 145: Win this for Tauchman

Shortly after yesterday’s 10-5 Yankees victory, the Red Sox fired president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. Yes, the same man who helped put the finishing touches on a championship team of 11 months ago. I expound upon that move much more here.

But before Dombrowski was fired, in the actual game, Mike Tauchman suffered a Grade 2 calf strain, news that will affect the Yankees’ postseason roster picture. With a recovery timeline of 6-8 weeks, he’s gone until at least the middle of October and likely the entire season. While the team has Cameron Maybin and Clint Frazier to fill in, they’re still waiting on Giancarlo Stanton.

Aaron Boone told reporters today that Stanton could be back by next homestand, which would be a major relief. That would give him a bunch of at-bats before the postseason, particularly if it’s on the early side of the homestand. Otherwise, left field could be an issue for the Bombers.

With Tauchman out, the Yankees turn to Maybin today, recovering from his own wrist issue. It’ll be Maybin, Frazier and perhaps either Tyler Wade or Breyvic Valera seeing reps in the corner outfield until Stanton is back. To the lineups!

News & Notes

  • CC Sabathia spoke with reporters and said he’s down for any role come the postseason. He also said that he would have retired by now if the team wasn’t in postseason contention. Considering his knee issues, who can blame him.
  • Jordan Montgomery will start for Double-A Trenton tomorrow and will be followed in relief by both Dellin Betances and Stephen Tarpley. Luis Severino will start the next night.
  • If the Yankees win tonight, they will have officially eliminated the Red Sox from division contention. That merely a formality at this point.

Tonight’s game will be on YES and WFAN locally and MLB Network for those out of market. It’ll be a 7:10 p.m. start. Enjoy!

Big blow. Yanks had a great defensive OF with Tauch joining Gardy and Judge. Although neither are bad, it takes a step back with Maybin/Stanton.
