The Yankees killed the “can’t beat the A’s” narrative yesterday and can take this weekend’s series with a win today. JA Happ gets a second shot against the A’s after a not so good outing in Oakland ten days ago. The lefty gave up five runs in four-plus innings, including two homers. It was basically the quintessential 2019 Happ start, unfortunately.
On the other side, Sean Manaea makes his season debut after missing all of this season recovering from shoulder surgery. If he’s anything like his pre-surgery self, it’ll be a big boost for Oakland’s rotation. The 27 year-old southpaw had a 3.59 ERA and 4.26 FIP in 160 2/3 innings before going under the knife last year.
Now that we’re in the final month of the regular season, roster expansion is upon us. Steve’s got you covered on who’s new in the Bronx today. And would you look at — there’s a familiar name penciled in the Yankees’ eighth spot:

News & Notes
- It’s Mike Mussina Hall of Fame Celebration Day at Yankee Stadium today. There’s a pregame ceremony scheduled for 12:30pm to honor Moose’s induction.
- Rehab assignments: Luis Severino starts for Triple-A Scranton this afternoon. Edwin Encarnación is expected to play there as well. Two pretty good additions for a team that needs a win and a Syracuse loss to clinch a division title!
- Of all places to get an injury update, Giancarlo Stanton delivered one at the US Open last night. He said he’ll return just in time for the postseason.
- Before today’s game, Aaron Boone told the media that Cameron Maybin’s wrist is an issue. Now that roster’s have expanded, there’s no need for an injured list stint. Boone hopes to have him back in a few days, anyway.
- Zack Britton’s calf is fine and he’s available to pitch this afternoon.
- Dellin Betances threw to hitters in yesterday and will do so again on Tuesday. Still no clear timetable for his return.
This afternoon’s game is on YES locally and TBS nationally. And as usual, John and Suzyn have the radio call on WFAN. Enjoy!
