Game 128: A Baker’s Dozen

What a great baseball game that was. The Yankees swatted the A’s away in an 8-2 victory, improving to 76-52 on the season. They sit just 4 games behind the Rays in the AL East and maintained their 3 game lead over the second Wild Card team. Notably, the win ensures the A’s can’t gain any ground on them in this series. Good stuff. A nice easy win, too.

Like yesterday, I watched this game and wrote it up in the morning, so they’ll be a bit more abbreviated. With that said, let’s get right to the takeaways.

  • Gerrit Cole is So Good: What more can be said about Gerrit Cole? He is just so, so good. Last night wasn’t even a vintage Cole performance – he really didn’t have his best stuff – but he still managed 9 strikeouts against 2 walks in 6 innings of work. He didn’t allow a run on six hits, though the hits meant he racked up 104 pitches. Cole did have his swing-and-miss stuff working, with a 30% whiff-per-swing rate overall, broken down to 30% on his fastball, 37% on his slider, and 40% on the change. He touched 100 miles-per-hour with the fastball and was able to make the big pitch when he needed to. Sure is nice to have an ace. He got his 200th strikeout, too.
  • Joely Was the Bullpen Weak Spot: A nice night for the non-Joely Rodriguez bullpen, with Chad Green and Lucas Luetge combining for 2.2 IP of scoreless, no-hit ball with 5 strikeouts. Rodriguez couldn’t complete the 7th, recording just 1 out after surrendering a walk, 2 hits, and 2 runs. Oh well. Can’t have it every night. Still, a very good night for the pen otherwise.
  • The Offense is Really, Really Clicking: The offense has now put up 5 or more runs in 8 of their last 9 games. That’s what I’m talking about. This was an especially dominant night for the top of the order. The Yanks’ top 4 hitters – DJ LeMahieu, Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton – went 9-19 with 4 runs scored, 2 HR, and 5 RBI. Oddly, just the two homers were extra-base hits, but still. I’ll take it.
    • Aaron Judge Dominates: A 3-5 night for Judge, who added a homer and 4 RBI. He’s rather quietly hitting .291/.383/532 (151 wRC+) on the season. What a monster.
    • Anthony Rizzo Rebounds: Nice rebound game for Rizzo, who has really struggled since coming off the COVID-IL. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for the Yankee first baseman.
    • Play Luke Voit Every Night: This is my drum to beat, but my word. Just play Luke Voit every night, please. He went 1-4 in this one, with the 1 being a no-doubt HR to right center field. He is killing it since he said he thinks he should play.
    • Joey Gallo Misses a HR: Joey Gallo was 1-5 and he juuuuust missed a home run. His double hit off the wall, but I thought it was gone off the bat.
    • Giancarlo is a Monster: I saved the best for last here. Giancarlo Stanton is a monster. An absolute monster. He’s red-hot, but I just want to leave this here. It speaks for itself.

Short and sweet, but you get the point. The two teams will play the third of the four game series today at 4:07 pm. Nestor Cortes (2-1, 2.56 ERA) will take on Frankie Montas (9-9, 3.84 ERA) in that one. Sure is nice to win 13 and a row and turn to your ace to make it 14, eh? Have a good day, everyone. See you soon.

  1. It’s amazing how different good Stanton is from bad Stanton. Thank god he turned it around.
