Game 126: And the Big Man rejoined the band

With just 37 games left in his regular-season Major League career, CC Sabathia returns to the Yankees for the stretch run, hopefully enough beyond peak knee pain to contribute.

Sabathia has had a trying season, going through two IL stints and dealing with the knee pain that has hampered him for years. He has a 4.78 ERA and an even worse FIP, allowing 2.4 homers per nine. He’s been closer to a fifth starter than his resurgent self in recent years, a sign of the end coming even if he hadn’t already announced his pending retirement.

Now, he faces his old team one last time, provided he doesn’t start against them in October. This will be his 302nd start with the Yankees, 65 more than he had with the Indians. But he established himself in Cleveland and earned a reputation for an ace there, even before his peak 2008 run in Milwaukee.

Now to the lineups:

Indians (73-51)

  1. Francisco Lindor, SS
  2. Oscar Mercado, LF
  3. Carlos Santana, 1B
  4. Yasiel Puig, RF
  5. Franmil Reyes, DH
  6. Roberto Perez, C
  7. Jason Kipnis, 2B
  8. Greg Allen, CF
  9. Mike Freeman, 3B

RHP Mike Clevinger

Yankees (83-42)

  1. DJ LeMahieu, 1B
  2. Aaron Judge, RF
  3. Didi Gregorius, SS
  4. Gio Urshela, 3B
  5. Gary Sanchez, C
  6. Brett Gardner, CF
  7. Gleyber Torres, 2B

News & Notes

  • Two roster moves: Sabathia was activated from the IL and Ryan Dull was sent to Triple-A. Meanwhile, Thairo Estrada was placed on the IL with a hamstring strain and Tyler Wade was recalled from Scranton-WB.
  • Estrada injured his hamstring running the bases yesterday but stayed in to finish the game (in right field, lol).
  • The home plate ump will be Phil Cuzzi, who ejected Sabathia from yesterday’s game. Welp
  • This ends the Yankees’ 19-games-in-17-day stretch. They’ve been 15-3 in that time, the best record in baseball this month. Even with some easy teams on the slate, I thought the schedule would hamper them more.

Welcome back, CC. It’ll be a 1:05 p.m. start on YES WPIX 11. Apologies on the TV station mixup. Temperatures should be in the mid-80s. Enjoy your Sunday.

CC looked strong (velo wise) in the first. He was undone in the 2nd. The main positive takeaway was he was excellent in the third, seemed to find his rhythm after returning from the IL. Hopefully that carries forward.

Miss the Real Big Man! RIP Clarence Maybe Gardner can be “Scooter” to CC’s “Big Man”!

Who they decide to use after CC should be interesting. Can’t imagine he’s going to give them much length. Hopefully, the bats came to play today.
