The Rays revolutionized the opener last season; The 2019 Yankees have perfected it.

Through 13 opener games this season, the Yankees are 12-1. In 11 of those games, Chad Green has been the starter, working to a 1.80 ERA that far outpaces his ugly overall line (weighed down by April still). These wins without needing a traditional starter are paramount to the Yankees’ MLB-leading record.

Though Green, Nestor Cortes Jr. and co. have been great in those contests, the true secret to success in the opener games has been score a boatload of runs. The Yankees have averaged 7.7 runs per game and haven’t scored fewer than four any time they’ve gone to an opener/Johnny Wholestaff concept.

Tonight, the Yankees are set to open with Green again and have three potential bulk followers: Cortes, per usual, in addition to Chance Adams and Jonathan Loaisiga. Here are the lineups for this series opener with Cleveland:
