Game 11: Urshela at short while Torres nurses minor injury

It was going to happen eventually. Once the Yankees demoted Tyler Wade to the Alternate Site, Gio Urshela became the de facto back up shortstop. Today, he makes his first start at the position as Gleyber Torres gets the night off. It’s the first time Urshela has played the position in the regular season since 2018.

Torres jammed his ring finger diving back to a base last night (Bryan Hoch). All testing came back clean, which is good news. He’ll hopefully return to the lineup tomorrow. Even with the minor injury in mind, Torres was due for a rest at some point. Up until today, Torres started all ten games this season at shortstop. The night off will leave DJ LeMahieu as the only Yankee to appear in every team game.

On the mound, Jameson Taillon makes his second start of the season. Toronto counters with the team’s ace, Hyun Jin Ryu. Here are the lineups behind the two pitchers:

New York Yankees (5-5)

Gio will be a fine SS and is probably better than Gleyber. I would move DJ over to 3rd, Gio to SS and Gleyber to 2B. That would be our ideal IF with Voit at 1B. And now we have to suffer through another Jay Bruce start in a must win game. I woulda DH’d Gary and caught Higgy tonight. Ride the hot hand. And there’s no reason Higgy can’t go out with Reggie and a bag of balls and take some grounders at 1B. He couldn’t be any worse than Bruce or Tauchman.

Hicks finally moved out of the 3 spot. I wonder if this is only because there is a lefty on the mound or if it is a real change.

Get well soon Voit. Odor and Bruce against a lefty, especially a good one “is not what you what”

The Yankees IF bench options should be an area of focus for Cashman. All of the current options are left handed and not very good hitters. Not sure why the non catcher bench players have to be left handed.
