Game 109: Let’s play two!

The Yankees and Red Sox are playing a day-night doubleheader in the Bronx. That sounds marvelous, doesn’t it? Hopefully both games don’t take 4+ hours like in London!

While Game 2 may resemble a bullpen game for both teams, the Yanks and Sox have their respective “aces” on the hill for Saturday’s matinee with Domingo German taking on Chris Sale.

German, of course, outdueled Sale to salvage a win out of last weekend’s series, but can he do it twice? The Sox hit him hard last time and now will have seen him twice in six days. Sale, meanwhile, has lost all three starts against the Yankees this season.

Lineups for Game 1:

Red Sox (59-52)

  1. Mookie Betts, RF
  2. Rafael Devers, 3B
  3. Xander Bogaerts, SS
  4. J.D. Martinez, DH
  5. Andrew Benintendi, LF
  6. Brock Holt, 2B
  7. Mitch Moreland, 1B
  8. Jackie Bradley Jr., CF
  9. Sandy Leon, C

LHP Chris Sale

Yankees (69-39)

  1. DJ LeMahieu, 1B
  2. Aaron Judge, RF
  3. Edwin Encarnacion, DH
  4. Gleyber Torres, SS
  5. Gio Urshela, 3B
  6. Cameron Maybin, LF
  7. Kyle Higashioka, C
  8. Breyvic Valera, 2B
  9. Brett Gardner, CF

RHP Domingo German

Notes

  • Chance Adams is the 26th man for the Yankees. I haven’t seen who Boston’s 26th man is yet. They may wait until between games to announce it.
  • Didi Gregorius remains sidelined with his finger sprain. He may be available as a bench bat today while Aaron Boone believes it’s not an IL situation.
  • Tommy Kahnle was named AL Reliever of the Month after tossing 11.2 IP of one-run ball. For a guy who spent most of last year hurt/in Triple-A, that’s quite the turnaround.

It’ll be a 1:05 start on YES and FS1. Weather is in the 80s with some cloud cover, which is the best you can hope for in August. Enjoy the twin bill!

  1. What a difference a year makes. Sox look like they are just running out the string in Game 1.

German with an Ace performance. 7 ip, 2er.

Sox owe Sale a minimum of $155 mil over the next 5. He can opt out next year, doubtful he does.

I’m a charter member of the Hal is cheap club. No excuse for Yanks not spending more on the rotation. These deals are tough to swallow. Price is on track for $96 mil over the next 3.

$63 mil a year for those two. That really may be the cost of winning one World Series. Paying guys a few hundred million to get a trophy.

Just spit balling here. It’s also why I’m one of the few fans that doesn’t like the Wild Cards or three divisions. Both added too much “luck” or “timing” into the equation of winning a trophy.

It was however great for the owners financials.

  2. Nice job with the site and content, guys, hopefully you start getting lots more comments soon.

I have one suggestion for YES if they want hire ratings-hire Bob Costas to broadcast some games, give him whatever he wants. He is not only the best play by play announcer currently active, he brings out the absolute best in both Paulie and Conie

  3. dasit

according to elias this is first game in mlb history with a gleyber and a breyvic
