Game 106: The calm before the deadline storm

Ish is about to hit the fan over the next 22 hours. The Yankees are going to either add pitcher(s), or they won’t. Those acquisitions will be the players the fans want, or they won’t. It’s going to be a madhouse.

For this brief moment, there will be the calm of a regular baseball game, as regular as a homer-filled derby game can be in the year 2019.

Better yet, we can an infrequent opponent visiting the Bronx. The D-backs haven’t been to Yankee Stadium since 2013, when a young glove-first prospect named Didi Gregorius smacked his first career home run off Phil Hughes. What a time to be alive!

Now, Didi will bat fifth against his former team, which will throw out Taylor Clarke, not the recently retired Phil Hughes. Here are the lineups for Clarke vs. J.A. Happ.

  1. Ketel Marte, CF

  6. Wilmer Flores, 2B
  7. Nick Ahmed, SS

News & Notes

  • DJ LeMahieu remains out, though he told reporters he thinks he’s good to go after tonight. Hopefully, that’s true and this doesn’t drag out further.
  • Brett Gardner sounds like he may just miss the minimum 10 days and come back Friday.
  • Also progressing well: Gary Sanchez and Luis Severino. Sanchez will likely take longer than the minimum (Saturday is 1st day he can return) while Sevy is nearing his return to the mound. Fingers crossed.
  • Giancarlo Stanton, meanwhile, isn’t particularly close.
  • Jonathan Loaisiga is beginning a rehab assignment with Double-A Trenton tonight. He’s been out since mid-May with a shoulder injury.

Tonight’s game is a 7:05 p.m. start on YES. Should be a hot one.
