Game 100: On Big Day, Yanks Beat Rays 3-1

It was a good day in Yankeeland. The Yanks traded for Joey Gallo, which soaked up a lot of my energy tonight. I’ll admit it. These are shorter takeaways than normal, but that’s okay. Largely a boring game anyway, despite it being an extra-innings win in the Trop. The Yanks won 3-1 despite nearly giving us all a heart attack at the very end. It’s 2021. What comes easy?

Would be nice to get a sweep tomorrow, honestly. Things might just be starting to turn around if the Yankees can leave Tampa with a sweep under their belts. The Yankees are 53-47 through 100 games this season, but a sweep against Tampa always feels good. Anyway, let’s get right to the takeaways.

That’s A Hell of A Job by Yankee Pitching. Seriously, there’s not a whole lot to say about this game without getting into this specifically. The Yankee pitching staff was absolutely marvelous in this one from start to finish. Just look at this beautiful, beautiful summary:

  • Nestor Cortes, Jr.: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 5 K
  • Lucas Luetge: 2.0 IP, 4 K
  • Zack Britton: 1.0 IP, zeros, BB
  • Chad Green: 1.0 IP, zeros
  • Aroldis Chapman: 1.0 IP, zeros, BB, 2 K

The Rays didn’t have a hit after the 4th inning in this game, and only reached base on two walks in the 7th and 10th inning. I am especially impressed with Nestor Cortes, who has just been excellent throughout the season so far. He has a 1.93 ERA in 32.2 innings and has basically been a godsend for the team.

As for the rest, I don’t think Green looked excellent, but the results were there, and the same is true for Green. Still, no complaints here. This is about as good of a game as you could imagine pitched. Just truly great stuff all around. It feels especially good to dominate the Rays at home and do it with the pen – that is exactly what the Yankees are built to do. Love it, and keep it up.

That said, it was a bit of a scare at the end here. Look at the last out of the game:

Raze the Trop, please.

A Quiet Day for the Offense, Too. That said, it was a very quiet day for the Yankee offense, which mustered 7 hits in 10 innings. They did have two doubles, at least, and scored one run on a DJ LeMahieu sac fly in the 5th inning to tie the game. The lack of power is ridiculous, but expected at this point. At least there’s a certain left-handed bat from Texas soon to come help with that. (It was also nice to see another extra-base hit from Torres, who lined a double.)

In extras, though, things got kind of funny. Here’s how the Yankees scored two runs to win the game:

Looked destined to be a double play, but instead it was that. Perhaps the tides are truly changing for the 2021 Yankees after all.

  • Aaron Judge joined the game late after undergoing undisclosed “medical testing” before the game. He was a late scratch.
  • The bottom of the order didn’t do much today, with slots 6-9 going 2-15 6 strikeouts.
  • I hate the Trop. Have I said that enough?

Nice to win this series already. Let’s get a sweep, shall we? Also, those last few blown games in Boston really, really sting now. What could have been. Oh well. Yanks try to get a sweep tomorrow at 1:10 pm when Gerrit Cole (10-5, 2.74 ERA) takes on Luis Patiño (1-2, 5.26 ERA) in a matinee getaway game. Enjoy your night, everyone.

It’s official: Joey Gallo is a Yankee

It was the best win of the season, Bobby, and best day in Yankee history. Let’s get the sweep today with Cole and get the hell out of this house of horrors. This club has proved it belongs in the postseason and now they’ll get another shot in the arm with Gallo. I don’t care if Gallo strikes out 5 times a game as long as he hits that home run. The lineup is now balanced and Gardy will sit on the bench where he belongs. Nestor is our ace and should be our #2 starter if we make the ALDS. Greg Allen once again had a big hit. He needs to be playing every day. Cash needs to get us another arm in the pen. A starter will probably be too expensive and we have Sevy returning. It’d be nice to be able to put German in the pen to give us a good multi inning reliever.

I was very disappointed that Judge avoided the vaccine question, meaning he wasn’t vaccinated and caused the outbreak costing us multiple games in Boston and a game in Houston. He could have used his platform to encourage others to get it but instead went the route of Lamar Jackson. Judge is a great player but not too smart. Big as an ox and dumb as one too. Bit he had the GW hit last night so all is forgiven.

  2. Mikey

I thought it was the best win of the season, Bobby.

  3. Mungo

I’m starting to believe in Nestor. Not sure how he added a couple miles to his fastball, but it seems to have made a significant difference.

2 baserunners doubled off, when you CANNOT get doubled off. If we don’t have a baserunning coach, we should hire one. If we do have one, we should replace him.
