Yankees 2021 Rule 5 Draft Protection Preview

The clock is ticking on the Yankees’ front office. Friday is the deadline for the team to protect Rule 5 draft eligible prospects by adding them to the team’s 40-man roster. Doing so will be a tad more challenging this season because the 40-man is currently full, so we could be in for a handful of roster moves over the next 48 hours.

Pinstriped Prospects has the list of all minor leaguers in the organization who are draft eligible. Today, I’ll briefly touch on a bunch of prospects who deserve the most consideration for a roster spot. I’ve included their position, age, highest level reached, and MLB Pipeline ranking if applicable. One final note before getting into the prospect snapshots: pitching prospect Randy Vasquez is not eligible, as we found out Monday.

DoTF: Wesneski dazzles again, Volpe goes yard

DoTF: Prospect Lists Update

News & Notes

  • Baseball America updated their top 100 prospects list and the Yankees have 3. Anthony Volpe has moved all the way up to #22 on their list. Oswald Peraza comes in at #59 and Jasson Dominguez is #61.
  • After his 7 shutout innings with 11 K’s last week, Josh Maciewjewski was named the High-A East Pitcher of the Week.

The AAA, AA, and A affiliates all had their scheduled Monday off-day. For a recap of this weekend’s action, check out Derek’s great weekend recap from yesterday.

DoTF: Wesneski’s 14 strikeouts stand out in weekend’s action

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

The RailRiders nearly went 3-0 against Rochester this weekend, but wound up blowing an 8-1 lead after seven innings today. I guess it makes up for their Saturday comeback when they were down 5-0 and 8-2.

  • Friday’s starter: RHP Deivi García: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K — 53 of 87 pitches were strikes (61%)First time completing five innings since August 15th. Too late to erase an ugly full season stat line (6.78 ERA in 85 innings), but finishing strong would be nice.
  • Saturday’s starter: RHP Shawn Semple: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB — 15 of 32 pitches were strikes (47%)Needless to say, his Triple-A debut didn’t go so well. 25 year-old Semple was the team’s 11th rounder back in ’17.
  • Sunday’s starter: LHP Matt Krook: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K — 53 of 85 pitches were strikes (62%)0.55 ERA in his last three starts…26 year-old has had a nice year after the team took him in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.
  • In relief: RHP Ron Marinaccio: 1.0 IP, K, zeroes — 7 of 11 pitches were strikes (64%)…Pitched Friday…92 strikeouts, 1.85 ERA in 58.1 innings this year.
  • CF Estevan Florial: 5-11, 6 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, K, SB — Like Deivi, hasn’t been a good Triple-A season for Florial, but a strong finish would be great. He’s at .310/.394/.586 this month with a much more tolerable 20% strikeout rate.
  • C Donny Sands: 4-7, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, BB, K — 18 homers in 358 plate appearances between Somerset and SWB
  • 1B Chris Gittens: 2-9, R, HR, 2 RBI, 4 K
  • Leftovers: C Rob Brantly homered on Saturday…LF Trey Amburgey had two hits and a double the same night. 1B Chris Gittens homered on Friday

DoTF: Medina cruises, Wells and Volpe stay hot

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

Yesterday’s game against Rochester was rained out. They’ll play a doubleheader starting at 5:05pm today.

Double-A Somerset Patriots

The Patriots topped the Yard Goats 1-0 behind a brilliant seven innings from Luis Medina and good work from the bullpen (box score).

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Luis Medina: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 WP — 64 of 92 pitches were strikes (70%) — Three of his five strikeouts came in the first two innings. Didn’t have the swing-and-miss going like his last two outings (22 strikeouts in 10 innings), but it didn’t matter.
  • In relief: RHP Addison Russ: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K — 11 of 12 pitches were strikes (92%)
  • In relief: RHP Nick Ernst: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K — 13 of 21 pitches were strikes (62%)
  • Prospect watch: SS Oswald Peraza: 1-3, RBI, BB, K — His single in the third drove in the lone run of the game.
  • Prospect watch: CF Brandon Lockridge: 1-3, BB, K, SB — He’s swiped 9 bags in 10 attempts from Somerset…Was 5-for-6 with Hudson Valley.
  • Prospect watch: 2B Oswaldo Cabrera: 1-3, 2B, BB, K, CS — He’s an extra base machine…needs just one more to reach 50 on the season.
  • Leftovers: As a 1-0 final score indicates, there wasn’t much offense to go around. The only others to reach base were LF Michael Beltre (two walks), 1B Dermis García (hit by pitch), and RF Thomas Milone (single).
