DoTF: Weekend catch up

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

The RailRiders had a very rough weekend against Buffalo. They lost all four games against the Bisons, including Saturday’s double-header.

  • Sunday’s starter: RHP Clarke Schmidt: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K — 51 of 80 pitches were strikes (64%)…I know he needs innings after missing most of the year, but the Yankees ought to try him in the major league bullpen. They need the help, especially with Jonathan Loáisiga out.
  • Saturday’s game 1 starter: LHP JP Sears: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 2 HR — 57 of 92 pitches were strikes (62%)
  • Saturday’s game 2 starter: RHP Deivi García: 3.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR, 2 WP — 42 of 75 pitches were strikes (56%)…Sigh, his nightmarish season knows no end…7.09 ERA in 80 innings, including 19 homers allowed and an 89/63 K/BB ratio, plus 7 hit batters.
  • Friday’s starter: RHP Luis Gil: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K — 55 of 78 pitches were strikes (71%)…Thankfully he will be back in the majors to make a start on Wednesday
  • In relief: RHP Ron Marinaccio: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K — Pitched Sunday. This guy should be on folks’ radars now. 19th rounder in 2017 has 88 strikeouts in 56.1 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. He’s Rule 5 eligible this offseason.
  • Rehab watch: RHP Michael King: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K – 18 of 22 pitches were strikes (82%)…Came in after Gil on Friday. Not sure what kind of role he would have on the major league team the rest of this season, but he’d be better than Brooks Kriske at the very least.
  • CF Estevan Florial: 1-9, R, 2B, 4 K — Siiigh
  • C Donny Sands: 3-11, 2B, 3 RBI, BB, K
  • Leftovers: RF Trey Amburgey had two hits and a homer on Saturday

  • Homer Watch: RF Elijah Dunham: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI
  • Leftovers: The other hits came from Everson Pereira, Andres Chaparro, Eric Wagaman, and Eduardo Torrealba

Low-A Tampa Tarpons

The Tarpons lost 9-6 to Bradenton. Keeping with the farm theme of the day, they squandered a late-inning lead. Tampa committed 5 errors in this one.

  • Starting Pitcher: RHP Juan Carela: 3.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 5 K, 2 HR – 53% strikes…has a 12.46 ERA in Tampa after a 1.46 ERA in the FCL

  • Rehab watch: Starting pitcher: RHP Michael King: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HR — 13 of 21 pitches were strikes (62%)…This was his first rehab appearance. He was put on the IL with a right finger contusion on July 8th. I don’t expect to see him in the majors again this year, but at least he’s healthy.
  • In relief: RHP Nick Goody: 0.1 IP, zeroes — 2 of 3 pitches were strikes (67%)
  • In relief: RHP Clarke Schmidt: 4.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR — 50 of 73 pitches were strikes (68%)…I know the Yankees want to get him innings after missing so much of the season, but I’d be curious to see him in a bullpen role for the rest of this season.
  • In relief: RHP Adam Warren: 0.2 IP, 1 K, zeroes — 7 of 15 pitches were strikes (47%)
  • In relief: RHP Reggie McClain: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K — 12 of 24 pitches were strikes (50%)

  • In relief: RHP Brody Koerner: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR — 22 of 42 pitches were strikes (52%)
  • In relief: RHP Ron Marinaccio: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K — 29 of 36 pitches were strikes (81%)…Absolutely pounded the zone. Has 84 strikeouts in 53.2 innings between Somerset and Scranton.
  • Hitting star: RF Trey Amburgey: 1-3, 3B, K — Struggled since returning from injury, hit .137/.233/.216 in August
  • Leftovers: DH Donny Sands didn’t reach base…LF Matt Pita and SS Cristian Perez had the only other hits, both singles, for the RailRiders.

DoTF: FCL Yanks hold off Tigers’ late rally

It’s Monday so the AAA, AA, and A affiliates were all off.

FCL Yankees

The FCL Yanks beat the Tigers 10-7. They have an impressive 27-13 record on the year.

  • In Relief: RHP Edward Paredes: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 0 K – quite the interesting stat line.
  • Offensive Star: LF Kyle Battle: 1-3, 1 2B, 3 RBI – had a bases clearing double

Dominican Summer League

DSL Yankees 1 beat the Twins 8-5 and DSL Yankees 2 beat the Giants Orange 4-2.

DoTF: Gleyber Torres homers in first rehab game

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

Lehigh Valley topped SWB, 10-5 (box score). This game was ugly: there were three hit batters, brushback pitches, and eventually, benches cleared.

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Nick Nelson: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 0 K — 19 of 43 pitches were strikes (44%)
  • In relief: RHP Nick Goody: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K — 13 of 24 pitches were strikes (54%)...Hit Alec Bohm with a pitch.

  • In relief: RHP Luis Gil: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K — 52 of 78 pitches were strikes (67%)…Pitching in relief as planned. Could see him in the Yankees bullpen to finish the season. Also nearly drilled Alec Bohm on a scary pitch near the head…Bohm was pissed and had been hit earlier.
  • In relief: RHP Reggie McClain: 0.2 IP, 1 H, zeroes — 3 of 7 pitches were strikes (43%)
  • In relief: RHP Brooks Kriske: 0.2 IP, zeroes — 5 of 7 pitches were strikes (71%)
  • Prospect watch: CF Estevan Florial: 0-5, 3 K, SB
  • Leftovers: Benches eventually cleared in this game. The Gil/Bohm at-bat may have been the catalyst, but David Paulino hitting C Max McDowell in the head was the last straw.

Double-A Somerset Patriots

The Patriots used a four run eighth inning to beat Akron, 7-4 (box score). Chad Bell, Oliver Dunn, and Oswaldo Cabrera all hit homers in the frame. And earlier in this one, Gleyber Torres went deep in his first rehab game.

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Hayden Wesneski: 5.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K — 61 of 87 pitches were strikes (70%)Gave up all four runs in the first inning and then settled down. Even with this start, Wesneski has a 2.22 ERA in 28.1 innings this month. 2019’s sixth-round pick is finishing pretty strong.
  • In relief: RHP Michael Gomez: 1.0 IP, zeroes — 5 of 8 pitches were strikes (63%)
  • In relief: RHP Barrett Loseke: 1.0 IP, 1 K, zeroes — 8 of 12 pitches were strikes (67%)

  • Leftovers: RF Isiah Gilliam, 1B Chad Bell, and 3B Oliver Dunn all hit a homer. Dunn (3) and Bell (2) had multi-hit games. Every Patriot reached base in this game.

High-A Hudson Valley Renegades

The ‘Gades held off Winston-Salem, 9-6 (box score). This one looked like a laugher when HV grabbed a 9-1 lead through the top of the eighth, but the Dash scored five in the bottom half to make things a bit more interesting.

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Anderson Muñoz: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR — 42 of 67 pitches were strikes (63%)…Longest outing of the season for the 23 year-old, who’s completed five innings just once before.

  • First rounder: DH Austin Wells: 1-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 3 K — Nice to see him homer but the strikeouts are alarming of late…38 this month in 98 plate appearances
  • Prospect watch: CF Elijah Dunham: 2-5, R, 2B, RBI — Has a seven-game hitting streak and is 10-for-29 during it.
  • Leftovers: 1B Pat DeMarco had a three-hit game, including two doubles…RF Eric Wagaman picked up two singles…3B Andres Chaparro, C Carlos Narvaez, and 2B Luis Santos tallied one hit each. LF Jake Sanford went 0-for-3.

Single-A Tampa Tarpons

The Tarpons scored two in the eighth, but it was too little, too late in a 6-2 loss to Clearwater (box score).

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Alfred Vega: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 HR — 39 of 65 pitches were strikes (60%)…This was the 20 year-old’s debut at the level after posting a 1.50 ERA in 24 innings in the FCL. Doesn’t look like he has big velo (averaged 91.7 MPH on his fastball), but his curveball and slider spin quite a bit.

  • The Martian: CF Jasson Dominguez: 1-4, 2B, 3 K — Has a nine-game hitting streak…11-for-34 (.324) with two doubles, a homer, three walks, and thirteen strikeouts…The swing-and-miss is still a bit high but good to see some better results of late.
  • First rounder: SS Trey Sweeney: 1-4, RBI, K — Hitting .246/.378/.492 in Tampa
  • Prospect watch: C Antonio Gomez: 0-4, RBI, K — 1-for-17 since promotion to Tampa
  • Leftovers: 1B Tyler Hardman picked up the only other base hit for the Tarpons.

Earlier this weekend

  • RHP Deivi García: 3.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 2 K
