DoTF: Zack Britton makes rehab appearance in Somerset’s walk-off win

  • Trevor Hauver and Oswald Peraza were named the May Player of the Month for the Low-A Southeast and High-A East leagues, respectively.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

The RailRiders are now 10 games above .500, as tonight’s 10-2 win over Lehigh Valley improved Scranton’s record to 17-7 (box score).

  • Starting Pitcher: RHP Adam Warren: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 1 K – 19 of 42 pitches were strikes (45%)
  • In relief: RHP Albert Abreu: 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K – 32 of 36 pitches were strikes (70%)…When he’s good, he’s really good.
  • In relief: RHP Sal Romano: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K – 17 of 25 pitches were strikes (68%)
  • In relief: RHP Nick Goody: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K – 19 of 26 pitches were strikes (74%)

  • Hitting co-star: RF Socrates Brito: 2-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, 2 K – Bobby mentioned in our Slack that he could be a call-up candidate. Brito has a .827 OPS and the team does need outfield help. Brito isn’t the sexiest option, but maybe they can ride his hot bat as a stopgap.
  • Hitting co-star: SS Hoy Park: 2-4, 3 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, BB – Third homer in five games for Park, who’s been red-hot since moving up to Scranton.
  • Hitting co-star: DH Trey Amburgey: 2-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K – Five homers in 32 at-bats this season…Missed a bunch of May, but has picked up right where he had left off.
  • Hitting co-star: LF Thomas Milone: 3-4, 2 R, 2B, RBI, SB – Hitting .372 in 43 at-bats at the level
  • Prospect watch: CF Estevan Florial: 0-4, R, BB, 2 K
  • Gittens check-in: 1B Chris Gittens: 1-3, RBI, BB, K – Removed on defense in seventh inning, but was in dugout afterward. Wouldn’t presume he’s getting called up because this was a 10-1 game at the time of his removal.
  • Leftovers: 2B Derek Dietrich and C Rob Brantly chipped in hits. Dietrich’s was a double. 3B Armando Alvarez was the lone RailRider not to reach base.

Double-A Somerset Patriots

The Patriots came back from a 4-0 deficit to to win this one in ten innings, 5-4 (box score). Two in the seventh, two in the ninth, and one in the tenth won it for Somerset. They’re now 18-7.

  • Rehab watch: LHP Zack Britton: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR – 15 of 27 pitches were strikes (56%)…Averaged 92-93 with his sinker, touched 94. Shaking some rust off still.
  • Bulk reliever: RHP Glen Otto: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 10 K – 59 of 88 pitches were strikes (67%)...ERA down to 3.42…has 45 strikeouts in 27.1 innings this season.
  • In relief: RHP Carlos Espinal: 2.0 IP, zeroes, 3 K – 15 of 24 pitches were strikes (63%)
  • In relief: RHP Greg Weissert: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K – 10 of 20 pitches were strikes (50%)Survived the extra innings rule in the 10th
  • Hero in extras: RF Isiah Gilliam: 1-3, R, RBI, 2 BB, K – Delivered walk-off single in the 10th
  • Also a hero: SS Diego Castillo: 1-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB – Two out, two-run homer in 9th tied this one up
  • Leftovers: C Donny Sands went 3-for-5 with a double…CF Michael Beltre picked up a walk, single, and 2 RBIs.

High-A Hudson Valley Renegades

The Renegades have now won four out of five with tonight’s 8-3 victory over Wilmington (box score). Hudson Valley is now 14-11.

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Luis Medina: 4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 7 K, 1 HR – 52 of 91 pitches were strikes (57%)46 strikeouts and 16 walks in 27.2 innings this season…control hasn’t really hurt his effectiveness at this level (1.63 ERA), but it could challenge him once he gets to Double-A.
  • In relief: RHP Barrett Loseke: 2.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K – 27 of 50 pitches were strikes (54%)
  • In relief: RHP Nick Ernst: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 K – 21 of 33 pitches were strikes (64%)
  • Hitting star: 1B Eric Wagaman: 2-3, R, 2B, HR, 5 RBI, BB – Former 13th rounder (2017) was hitting .135/.289/.135 entering this one…Broke out in a big way
  • Prospect watch: 2B Ezequiel Duran: 2-3, 3 R, HR, RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB – Filled up the box scorejust his second and third walks of the season
  • Whoa Breaux: C Josh Breaux: 2-5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K – 2nd rounder in 2018 has really struggled this season, but has ample power
  • First rounder: DH Anthony Seigler: 1-3, 2 R, 2 BB, K – His first hit of the season after returning from injury yesterday.
  • Leftovers: SS Oswald Peraza went 0-for-5 with three strikeoutsRF Frederick Cuevas had a hit and stolen base

Single-A Tampa Tarpons

This one was suspended in the sixth with the score tied 4-4 due to rain (box score).

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Yoendrys Gomez: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K – 22 of 36 pitches were strikes (61%)…I was just wondering about his health today…Had an undisclosed arm injury, but I guess he’s OK now. This was his first outing of the season.
  • In relief: RHP Sean Boyle: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K – 37 of 55 pitches were strikes (67%)
  • First round watch: SS Anthony Volpe: 2-3, R, HR, RBI, K – Third homer of the year happened right before the suspension…Sadly no Statcast reading, but he did have a 104.1 MPH single.
  • First round watch: C Austin Wells: 1-2, 2B – 105 MPH off the bat
  • Leftovers: DH Josh Smith went 0-for-3 with 2 strikeouts…2B Jesus Bastidas hit a three-run homer

    Looks like Medina’s control has regressed. He finished last year and started this year strong.

    If he can just put it together in terms of strike throwing he could fly thru the system. Probably doesn’t even need good command, just a little bit of control.
