Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

The RailRiders nearly went 3-0 against Rochester this weekend, but wound up blowing an 8-1 lead after seven innings today. I guess it makes up for their Saturday comeback when they were down 5-0 and 8-2.

  • Friday’s starter: RHP Deivi García: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K — 53 of 87 pitches were strikes (61%)First time completing five innings since August 15th. Too late to erase an ugly full season stat line (6.78 ERA in 85 innings), but finishing strong would be nice.
  • Saturday’s starter: RHP Shawn Semple: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB — 15 of 32 pitches were strikes (47%)Needless to say, his Triple-A debut didn’t go so well. 25 year-old Semple was the team’s 11th rounder back in ’17.
  • Sunday’s starter: LHP Matt Krook: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K — 53 of 85 pitches were strikes (62%)0.55 ERA in his last three starts…26 year-old has had a nice year after the team took him in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.
  • In relief: RHP Ron Marinaccio: 1.0 IP, K, zeroes — 7 of 11 pitches were strikes (64%)…Pitched Friday…92 strikeouts, 1.85 ERA in 58.1 innings this year.
  • CF Estevan Florial: 5-11, 6 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, K, SB — Like Deivi, hasn’t been a good Triple-A season for Florial, but a strong finish would be great. He’s at .310/.394/.586 this month with a much more tolerable 20% strikeout rate.
  • C Donny Sands: 4-7, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, BB, K — 18 homers in 358 plate appearances between Somerset and SWB
  • 1B Chris Gittens: 2-9, R, HR, 2 RBI, 4 K
  • Leftovers: C Rob Brantly homered on Saturday…LF Trey Amburgey had two hits and a double the same night. 1B Chris Gittens homered on Friday

Double-A Somerset Patriots

  • Friday’s starter: RHP Jhony Brito: 6.0 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K — 62 of 84 pitches were strikes (74%)…Nice rebound after allowing 7 runs in his last start.

He was the team’s 6th round pick in 2019.
  • Sunday’s starter: LHP Ken Waldichuk: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 5 K, 1 HR — 42 of 85 pitches were strikes (49%)Hasn’t had great control at Double-A, with 36 walks in 73.2 innings. He had 13 in 30.2 frames for Hudson Valley.
  • In relief: RHP Zach Greene: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K — 26 of 35 pitches were strikes (74%)2019’s 8th rounder is another relief prospect I like…87/21 strikeout-to-walk ratio this season.
  • CF Brandon Lockridge: 6-15, 7 R, 2B, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K, 2 SB — 10 hits in his last 26 at-bats after he went 0-for-8 in his return from the injured list.

  • Saturday’s starter: LHP Josh Maciejewski: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 K — 62 of 93 pitches were strikes (67%)This typically would have been the best pitching line across the system in any given night, but Wesneski stole his thunder.
  • Sunday’s starter: RHP Matt Sauer: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 HR — 57 of 89 pitches were strikes (64%)Rule 5 eligible 2nd rounder from the 2017 draft has been OK this season…4.78 ERA in 105.1 innings with Tampa and Hudson Valley this year. Few too many walks (46) and homers (11) even though he’s done a decent job with strikeouts (121).
  • SS Anthony Volpe: 3-6, 4 R, 2B, RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, SB — Still five homers shy of a 30/30 season…There’s time but he’ll need a power surge to finish.
