DoTF: Somerset Strikes Out 16 and Walks None as Farm goes 3-1

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

The RailRiders fell to 13-6 after a 5-2 loss to the Bisons. Not a great night for the staff, who used 7 pitchers and surrendered 11 hits. Nasty Nestor was good, though. Also a pretty quiet night from the offense, which went 1-9 with RISP.

  • Starting Pitcher: LHP Nestor Cortes Jr.: 4.0 IP, 4 H, zeros, 3 K – 72% of his pitches were strikes…another nice appearance for Nasty Nestor, who has allowed just 2 runs in 11 IP w/ 18 strikeouts
  • In Relief: RHP Braden Bristo: 1.0 IP, zeros, 1 K – 55% of his pitches were strikes…hasn’t allowed a run in 7.2 innings in 2021
  • In Relief: RHP Nick Nelson: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1BB, 2 K – 63% of his pitches were strikes, which is nice to see from Nelson…dude can be untouchable..walk hurt him though, as he gave up a 2R HR
  • In Relief: RHP Nick Goody: 0.2 IP, 1 H, zeros, 1 K – a nice 69% of his pitches were strikes
  • In Relief: Sal Romano: 1.0 IP, 1 H, zeros, 1 K – a nice 69% of his pitches were strikes…nice Yankees debut for Romano
  • In Relief: RHP Luis García: 0.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 1 K – 58% of his pitches were strikes…brutal night for García
  • In Relief: RHP Addison Russ: 0.1 IP, 1 K – 67% of his pitches were strikes
  • Florial Watch: CF Estevan Florial: 1-5, 2 K, 1 SB
  • Hitting Star: DH Zack Zehner: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 2B – accounted for both RBI
  • Leftovers: Rob Brantley and Thomas Milone both had two hits with a double…Andrew Velazquez had the other Scranton hit and also a stolen base

Double-A Somerset Patriots

The Patriots are 14-5 after a 2-1 victory over the Fisher Cats. Somerset pitchers struck out 16 opponents and didn’t walk anyone. That’ll do. They got outhit 7-4 in the game, but it was no matter.

  • Starting Pitcher: RHP Janson Junk: 4.0 IP, 3 H, zeros, 7 K – 72% of his pitches were strikes…another nice appearance for Junk, who has allowed just 1 run in 15 IP w/ 23 K
  • In Relief: LHP JP Sears: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K – 72% of his pitches were strikes…he really earned the win in this one, even if he fell apart a bit at the end
  • In Relief: RHP Greg Weissert: 0.1 IP, 1 K – struck out the one batter he faced to get the save and clean up the mess
  • Hitting Star: C Donny Sands: 1-4, 1 RBI – broke open the scoring in the bottom of the 8th with an RBI single
  • Hitting Star Times Two: 1B Dermis Garcia: 1-4, 1 RBI – he immediately followed Sands with an RBI knock of his own in the 8th...he stays hot
  • Leftovers: Michael Beltre had another hit, making batters 2,3 and 4 3-11 with a walk…everyone else was 1-17 with 6 K, though they did work 23 walks, I guess…Matt Pita had the hit, after which he scored

High-A Hudson Valley Renegades

The ‘Gades continued their dance with .500, improving to 10-9 after defeating the BlueClaws 3-2. They scored one run in each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings to take the game. Let’s hope they can build on this one tomorrow.

  • Starting Pitcher: RHP Jhony Brito: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K – 70% of his pitches were strikesreally nice start
  • In Relief: RHP Elvis Peguero: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 K – a nice 69% of his pitches were strikes
  • In Relief: RHP Tanner Myatt: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K – just 45% of his pitches were strikes…bit by the walks
  • Hitting Star: 3B James Nelson: 3-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI – had a solo shot and an RBI singleaccounted for half the hits
  • Hitting Star: 1B Kyle MacDonald: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 HR – his solo shot made it 3-1
  • Leftovers: Ezequiel Duran had a triple…Frederick Cuevas had the other hit…Oswald Peraza had a stolen base, his 11th of the season

Single-A Tampa Tarpons

The Tarpons improved to 14-5 after a low-scoring 3-2 victory over the Dunedin Jays. Nothing notable, really, though it’s always nice to see a young lower-minors staff only surrender 2 walks. That’s exactly what Tampa did tonight, so good stuff there.

  • Starting Pitcher: RHP Matt Sauer: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K – a nice 69% of his pitches were strikes
  • In Relief: RHP Wellington Diaz: 1.0 IP, zeros, 1 K – 67% of his pitches were strikes
  • In Relief: RHP Carson Coleman: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K – 47% of his pitches were strikes
  • Hitting Star: LF Jake Sanford: 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB – tied the game with a single in the 6th, scored the go-ahead run in the 8th after a walk
  • Hauver Heat Check: 2B Trevor Hauver: 2-4, 1 R, 1 K – nice multi-hit game for Hauver, who scored the tying run in the 8th after a single
  • Multi-Hit Game: 1B Chad Bell: 2-4, 1 3B
  • Leftovers: Josh Smith had a hit, a walk, and a stolen base…Anthony Volpe had a hit, a run, a walk, and was caught stealing…everyone else was hitless
