DoTF: Schmidt stymies Reading in Trenton Game 1 win

News & Notes

  • Luis Severino and Dellin Betances will rehab in Trenton on Friday. While the Yankees likely preferred Scranton, that wasn’t an option as Game 2 of that series in Durham is postponed until at least Friday due to rain.
  • Thairo Estrada has also joined Trenton and will likely rehab during the ELDS, The Trentonian reports.
  • The Yankees spent the international bonus pool money they acquired to sign 16-year-old Dominican 3B Enger Castellano. Baseball America’s Ben Badler reported the signing and shared video of Castellano from 2018.
  • Castellano was part of their initially reported signings on July 2, but they must have not had room for his bonus until now. MLB.com described him as a power hitter.
  • Lastly, transaction roundup: Veteran RHP David Hernandez was released. RHP Greg Weissert, INF Angel Aguilar and C Francisco Arcia were sent up to Scranton while LHP Trevor Lane and INFs Oswaldo Cabrera and Diego Castillo joined Trenton for the postseason.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders ILDS Game 1: (9-2 loss at Durham) … Durham leads the best-of-5 series, 1-0. Game 2 will be Saturday with inclement weather coming Friday … Game was closer until Rosenthal came in for eighth.

  • Starter: RHP Brian Keller: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 8 K, 1 HR, 3/0 GB/FB — 56 of 93 (60%) pitches were strikes … He’s struck out 15 in last two games combined for Scranton while going 5.1 innings in both.
  • In Relief: RHP Kaleb Ort: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 1 HR
  • In Relief: RHP Trevor Rosenthal: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 WP — Just seven of his 21 pitches were strikes … I feel really bad. He clearly has the yips or something similar and considering he’s already on MiLB deals, it may end his career soon.
  • In Relief: RHP Greg Weissert: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • Hitting Star: 1B Gosuke Katoh: 2-for-4, 2B, solo homer, 2 K — He now has a seven-game hitting streak with three HR in that span.
  • On Deck: C Erik Kratz: 1-for-4, solo homer — Here’s his dinger … He also has a seven-game hitting streak!
  • On Deck: 3B Mandy Alvarez: 1-for-3, RBI, 2 BB
  • On Deck: LF Brandon Wagner: 2-for-4, 2B, R, K
  • Notables: SS Breyvic Valera went 1-for-5 … 2B Wendell Rijo went 1-for-4 with a K on his 24th birthday while DH Kyle Higashioka went 0-for-4 with 2 K.

Double-A Trenton Thunder ELDS Game 1: (4-3 win at Reading) … Remarkable win considering they struck out 16 times, were no-hit for 5.1 innings by Phillies top prospect Spencer Howard, and finished with four hits … They lead the series, 1-0, with Game 2 in Reading on Thursday.

  • Rehab Start: LHP Jordan Montgomery: 3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K, 0/3 GB/FB — 34 of 44 (77%) pitches were strikes … Made an error on a bunt hit … Figure he can get to 4 IP or 55-60 pitches for his next outing … Here’s one of his strikeouts.
  • Follower: RHP Clarke Schmidt: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 4 K, 1 Balk, 7/5 GB/FB —45 of 74 (61%) pitches were strikes … He now has three straight scoreless starts since his debut in Trenton … Facing a tough team in a postseason environment, this shows the org something.
  • Hitting Star: LF Ben Ruta: 2-for-5, RBI, K
  • On Deck: CF Rashad Crawford: 1-for-3, BB, 2 R, K
  • On Deck: SS Kyle Holder: 0-for-3, go-ahead RBI BB
  • Notables: 1B Chris Gittens went 0-for-2 with 2 BB and a K … RF Alexander Palma went 0-for-3 with a R, K and 2 RBI, including a game-tying fielder’s choice in the eighth inning … 2B Hoy Jun Park went 0-for-3 with a BB and 2 K.

Monty hit a high of 95 mph. That’s encouraging. Also glad to see Schmidt thriving. Two TJS pitchers who look to help the Yankees in the coming years. Neither are front liners, but both are potential cost-effective mid-rotation help.

  2. JG (Ben Francisco)

Schmidt seems like the real deal.
