DoTF: Gil starts combined no-hitter for RailRiders

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

Luis Gil, Reggie McClain, and Stephen Ridings combined to no-hit Rochester in a 8-0 victory (box score). It’s really exciting to see Gil do this as he inches closer to the majors.

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Luis Gil: 6.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K — 55 of 84 pitches were strikes (65%)…After walking the second batter of the game, Gil retired 14 batters in a row. The 23 year-old righty had struggled a bit since the promotion from Somerset (5.09 ERA/6.63 FIP in 23 innings), so this was terrific to see.
  • In relief: RHP Reggie McClain: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K — 18 of 27 pitches were strikes (67%)…He’s got a 0.55 ERA in 33 innings for the RailRiders.
  • In relief: RHP Stephen Ridings: 1.0 IP, zeroes — 6 of 9 pitches were strikes (67%)
  • Hitting star: CF Socrates Brito: 1-1, 2 R, HR, RBI, 2 BB — Fourth inning solo shot opened the scoring.
  • Leftovers: SS Andrew Velazquez and 1B Brandon Wagner had two hits each. C Donny Sands tallied two RBIs. Overall, this was a pretty well-rounded offensive game, with everyone but DH Armando Alvarez reaching base.

Double-A Somerset Patriots

The Patriots lost to Altoona, 9-6 (box score). The Curve plated six runs in the fifth inning, which did Somerset in.

  • Starting pitcher: LHP JP Sears: 4.0 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2 HR — 55 of 79 pitches were strikes (70%)
  • In relief: RHP Elvis Peguero: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K — 29 of 43 pitches were strikes (67%)
  • In relief: RHP Michael Gomez: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K — 32 of 50 pitches were strikes (64%)
  • Hitting star: LF Isiah Gilliam: 3-3, 3 R, 2B, RI, BB, SB — He’s been hot; has seven hits in last three games and 10 in his last six.
  • Staying hot: CF Brandon Lockridge: 1-3, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K, SB — Lockridge has taken off for Somerset since a bump up from Hudson Valley. He’s hitting .344/.364/.656 with three homers in 32 at-bats. Had just three dingers in 125 at-bats with the Renegades beforehand.
  • Prospect watch: SS Oswald Peraza: 1-4, 2B, BB, SB — Hit safely in eight straight games
  • Leftovers: 2B Oswaldo Cabrera and 3B Jesus Bastidas had hits. DH Diego Castillo walked and stole two bags.

High-A Hudson Valley Renegades

Hudson Valley toppled Aberdeen, 8-0 (box score). The offense came from the usual suspects (Anthony Volpe and Jake Sanford) while Jhony Brito tossed a gem.

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Jhony Brito: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K — 57 of 90 pitches were strikes (63%)…23 year-old righty owns a 2.76 ERA in 65.1 innings this season.
  • In relief: RHP Alexander Vizcaíno: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K — Fourth game back from injury
  • In relief: RHP Nick Ernst: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K — Has 60 strikeouts in 32.2 innings this season.
  • Hitting star: SS Anthony Volpe: 2-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, BB, K — Ho hum. Just another day in the office. His High-A OPS now stands at an even 1.000.
  • Prospect watch: RF Jake Sanford: 1-4, R, HR, 2 RBI — 2019’s 3rd rounder is in the midst of a huge breakout himself, owning a 1.023 OPS since his call-up to Hudson Valley in seven games. Had a .808 OPS with Tampa in 52 games beforehand.
  • Rough game: 2B Ezequiel Duran: 0-5, 4 K — There are some swing-and-miss concerns with Duran, but he has dropped his strikeout rate this year by about 4 percent.
  • Leftovers: DH Josh Breaux was hitless in four at-bats and struck out once…3B James Nelson and 1B Kyle MacDonald both signed three times…C Saul Torres tallied two singles and 2 RBIs.

Single-A Tampa Tarpons:

The Tarpons beat Clearwater 6-5 in walkoff fashion (box score). In an extremely weird finish — a position player, Pedro Diaz — picked up the win in relief. Sometimes, you run out of pitchers in a minor league game, I guess.

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Tyrone Yulie: 2.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K — 29 of 63 pitches were strikes (46%)…19 year-old’s debut after promotion from the FCL.
  • In relief: LHP Edgar Barclay: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K — 33 of 48 pitches were strikes (69%)
  • In relief: RHP Nelvin Correa: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K — 25 of 42 pitches were strikes (60%)
  • In relief: RHP Jarod Lessar: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 6 BB, 1 K — 15 of 42 pitches were strikes (36%)…oof
  • Position player pitching: C/RHP Pedro Diaz: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K — Stranded two runners and picked up the win!
  • The Martian: CF Jasson Dominguez: 1-3, RBI, 3 BB, 2 K — That’s 10 walks in 59 plate appearances between the FCL and Tampa.
  • Prospect watch: RF Everson Pereira: 1-6, 2 RBI, 4 K — Delivered the walk-off two-run single in the 10th.
  • Leftovers: Everyone but 3B Eduardo Torrealba had a hit for Tampa. LF Ryder Green, 1B Andres Chaparro, and 2B Luis Santos each had two knocks.

Rookie-Level FCL Yankees

The rookie level Yankees improved to 12-4 with a blowout victory over the FCL Tigers, 19-9 (box score).

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Alfred Vega: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
  • In relief: RHP Starling Perez: 2.0 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 2 HR
  • In relief: RHP Yoljeldriz Diaz: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K — Team’s 42nd-best prospect per FanGraphs
  • In relief: RHP Osiel Rodriguez: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K — Team’s 39th-best prospect per FanGraphs
  • In relief: LHP Brandom Sanchez: 1.0 IP, zeroes
  • Hitting star: CF Raimfer Salinas: 3-4, 3 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 BB, 1 CS — Have yourself a day, Raimfer. He’s 38th on FanGraphs’ list, by the way.
  • Prospect watch: DH Alexander Vargas: 3-6, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, K, 2 SB — I imagine more of you are familiar with Vargas than the guys above. Vargas is a consensus top-10 team prospect.
  • Leftovers: So many guys could be included here. A 19 run outburst will do that.

Really is fun to watch these farm wrapups, so much going on.

Question: Trevor Hauver appears to have been a DNP for Tampa. Anyone know why? Day off? Injury? Hoping they just gave him the day off to rest (do they even do that in single-A ball?)

  2. Dani

The farm is unbelievable this year. So much fun to follow!

    • Mungo

So many interesting players to follow who seem legit and could help the big club in the coming seasons.
