DoTF: Gil dominates and Peraza homers again

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders

Scranton’s record falls to 8-3 after losing to Lehigh Valley, 5-4 (box score). Comeback fell short after falling behind 5-0 through four. Bullpen did it’s part tossing five no-hit innings, though.

  • Starting pitcher: LHP Mike Montgomery: 4.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, BB, 2 K – 42 of 68 pitches were strikes (62%). Up to a 9.26 ERA in 3 starts (11.2 IP).
  • In relief: RHP Nick Nelson: 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K, WP – 30 of 43 pitches were strikes (70%). I know Nelson has been frustrating at times, but he has the tools to be a really good reliever, as evidenced by this outing.
  • In relief: RHP Braden Bristo: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K – 9 of 14 pitches were strikes (64%)
  • In relief: RHP Nick Goody: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K – 10 of 16 pitches were strikes (63%)
  • Florial’s debut: CF Estevan Florial: 1-4, R, 3B, BB – Florial led off in this one. Triple came in his second at-bat.
  • Gittens goes yard: 1B Chris Gittens: 1-4, R, HR, 2 RBI – His third homer of the year…has a 1.229 OPS in the early going. Has only struck out in 15 percent of plate appearances (6 of 39), which is great but very unlike him.
  • Leftovers: LF Ryan LaMarre had two hits. He’s coming up to replace Aaron Hicks in the majors. RF Socrates Brito, C Rob Brantly, and 3B Armando Alvarez has hits as well.

Double-A Somerset Patriots

Somerset won 5-3 against New Hampshire (box score). The Patriots are now 7-4.

  • Starting pitcher: RHP Luis Gil: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K – 42 of 68 pitches were strikes (62%). Dominant outing. Already has 19 strikeouts in only 10.2 IP.
  • In relief: RHP Kevin Gadea: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, K – 18 of 32 pitches were strikes (56%)
  • In relief: RHP Michael Gomez: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K – 24 of 48 pitches were strikes (50%). Got the vulture win after coughing up the lead in the sixth.
  • In relief: RHP Reid Anderson: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K – 11 of 17 pitches were strikes (65%)
  • In relief: RHP Greg Weissert: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K – 12 of 21 pitches were strikes (57%)
  • Hitting co-star: SS Oswaldo Cabrera: 2-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, K – Clutch eighth inning dinger tied the game
  • Hitting co-star: 1B Dermis García: 1-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, 2K – Also clutch two-run homer in eighth gave Patriots lead. When he hits them, he crushes them. Power has been his calling card ever since he signed for $3 million in 2014.
  • Leftovers: RF Isaiah Gilliam, 3B Max Burt, and LF Matt Pita had hits.

High-A Hudson Valley Renegades

This one was over by the third inning, when Aberdeen grabbed a 7-1 lead which ended in an 8-1 win over the Renegades (box score). Hudson Valley is 5-6.

  • Starting Pitcher: RHP Mitch Spence: 2.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K – 31 of 44 pitches were strikes (70%). Weird outing included: two-run single on batted ball to Spence (must have deflected off him), double steal of second and home, and a single scoring a runner from first because of two errors on the play.
  • In relief: RHP Barrett Loseke: 3.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K – 32 of 56 pitches were strikes (57%)
  • In relief: RHP Charlie Ruegger: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K – 33 of 51 pitches were strikes (65%)
  • In relief: RHP Elvis Peguero: 2.0 IP, 1 BB, zeroes – 16 of 24 pitches were strikes (67%)
  • Hitting star: SS Oswald Peraza: 3-4, R, HR, RBI – Another homer, his fifth. 20 year-old prospect is up to .349/.429/.744.
  • Leftovers: 2B Ezequiel Duran, DH Josh Breaux, LF Frederick Cuevas all had a hit a piece. The rest of the lineup went hitless.

Single-A Tampa Tarpons

Tampa improved to 8-3 and defeated Lakeland, 8-2 (box score).

  • Starting Pitcher: RHP Randy Vasquez: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K – 33 of 55 pitches were strikes (60%). 22 year-old Has a 0.87 ERA in 10.1 IP this season. Called a “spin rate monster” at FanGraphs, and it showed tonight. Statcast had his average curveball above 3,000 RPM.
  • In relief: LHP Michael Giacone: 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K – 26 of 44 pitches were strikes (59%). Tonight’s winning pitcher.
  • In relief: RHP Carson Coleman: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K – 21 of 36 pitches were strikes (58%).
  • In relief: LHP Clay Aguilar: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
  • Hitting star: RF Juan De Leon: 2-4, 2 R, 3B, BB, 3 RBI – Good things happen when De Leon puts the ball in play. Strikeouts have held back the now 23-year old. Blast from the past night, huh? Like García, De Leon was also a 2014 international signee ($2 million).
  • Setting the table: SS Anthony Volpe: 2-4, BB, 2B, RBI, K, SB – 5th steal. Somehow didn’t score a run in spite of being on base three times.
  • First round watch: C Austin Wells: 1-4, BB, 2 RBI, K, SB – Stole a base (his third) and passed ball (also his third).
  • Leftovers: DH Jake Sanford had two hits and a double…1B Chad Bell, CF Pat DeMarco, and LF Elijah Dunham chipped in hits.
