Stray observations from Yankees-Red Sox in London

Sat behind home plate for last night’s Tampa game in Daytona. Here are some random (re: amateur) observations:

Estevan Florial — He lived up to all of his scouting reports, both good and bad; three true outcomes: KS in the 1st, BB in the 3rd, solo HR in the 5th! Homer was crushed to the pull side; the sound got everyone’s attention. Has a great arm in CF; can really run; as athletic as we’ve all been told; plays with swagger; easy to see what all the fuss is about; can dream on this guy; lots of swing and miss, but the tools…. Oy!

Steven Sensley: I’m not sure if he’ll ever reach the bigs but if he does, he’ll be the latest Large Adult Son. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a guy fill out a baseball uniform the way he does; the jersey was almost too small for him; he’s really muscled-up, maybe too much so. Had trouble catching up to high 80s fastballs; didn’t look good.

Trevor Stephan: Fastball was 93-95 with little to no movement and when he left it over the plate it got hammered; secondary stuff is pretty good but the fastball is flat; pitched with no confidence; when he was pulled in the 4th he walked REALLY slowly off the mound and to the dugout; future reliever? Maybe.

Anderson Severino: Much bigger than his listed height/weight; fastball was consistently 96-98; looked great the first time through the lineup; got smacked around the second time; hard, sweeping breaking ball; one slider broke so bad that the catcher totally whiffed and the HP umpire took one right in the family jewels; he’s 24 and in High A so I’m not sure he’ll make it, but I can’t see them giving up on that arm any time soon.

Dermis Garcia: Not nearly as heavy as we’ve all (me?) been led to believe; seemed smaller to me than Sensley, but then again Sensley looks like a middle linebacker; didn’t do much at the plate, wasn’t bad in the field; just a kid and looks it in the face.

The Florial HR supposedly went 461 feet with an exit velocity of 110 mph.
