ALDS Game 1: The pursuit starts now

We’re excited for playoff games, too.

Finally, it’s time for Yankees playoff baseball. It’s been quite the wait for tonight; this is the last Division Series to get underway. We’ve had the pleasure to sit back and watch two Wild Card games and a handful of Division Series affairs since the Yankees last played, but now the attention turns to the Bronx.

Tonight, it’s two of baseball’s best offenses against each team’s ace. Here are the lineups:

Minnesota Twins (101-61)

  1. Mitch Garver, C
  2. Jorge Polanco, SS
  3. Nelson Cruz, DH
  4. Eddie Rosario, RF
  5. Miguel Sanó, 3B
  6. Max Kepler, CF
  7. Marwin González, LF
  8. C.J. Cron, 1B
  9. Luis Arráez, 2B

RHP José Berríos

New York Yankees (103-59)

  1. DJ LeMahieu, 1B
  2. Aaron Judge, RF
  3. Brett Gardner, CF
  4. Edwin Encarnación, DH
  5. Giancarlo Stanton, LF
  6. Gleyber Torres, 2B
  7. Gary Sánchez, C
  8. Didi Gregorius, SS
  9. Gio Urshela, 3B

LHP James Paxton

News & Notes

  • Judge and Stanton aren’t batting back-to-back as Bobby discussed earlier this week, though it’s not necessarily a surprise.
  • Sánchez and Encarnación are back, healthy, and in the lineup. Glad to see them back after what was nearly very bad timing for late season injuries.
  • Luke Voit is noticeably absent from the starting nine. Maybe we’ll see him pinch hit late in this one; perhaps for Didi Gregorius if the Twins have a lefty on the mound.
  • Yesterday was a miserable day in New York, but today is ideal playoff baseball weather. The air is crisp and there are few clouds in the sky. Temperatures will drop into the mid-40s before this one’s said and done.
  • Around the league: the Astros, Dodgers, and Cardinals all have taken 1-0 series leads. Houston dominated Tampa Bay this afternoon, St. Louis and Atlanta are underway now, and Los Angeles and Washington play later.

For those at home today, MLB Network is carrying tonight’s game and first pitch scheduled for 7:07pm. As usual, John and Suzyn have the radio call on WFAN. Let’s go Yankees!

A play like that botched double play happens in every series. That’s how you lose playoff games. Tampa botched a play earlier today.

Wow John Smoltz is sooooooo so so bad

if batting gardner third was actually as stupid as it seems there’s no way the front office would allow boone to do it. the analytics department must like splitting up the righties

I would think that part of it also has to do with Gardy hitting righties well this year. But, I agree with your overall point.

I worry a bit about paxton tonight. Not so much lately, but we know the first gives him some issues. First playoff game tonight, I expect he’ll be jacked up. That could be a bad combo. Plus, the twins crush lefties. Hopefully the bats came to play.
